First International Conference

Politics and Ethics:
An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Contemporary Issues

March 24-26, 2005
University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Coast, USA

CALL FOR PAPERS

This multidisciplinary conference seeks to explore issues surrounding the 
relationship between, and intersection of, politics and ethics. 
Contributions are sought from those in any field that engages with the 
study of political ethics: political science, philosophy, international 
relations, sociology, cultural studies, legal studies, and other areas.

Papers and panels are invited on issues related to any of the following:

*  democratic theory and practice
*  transitional justice
*  state violence and coercion
*  poverty and inequality
*  globalisation and the politics of protest
*  international organisations and global governance
*  biopolitics and global health issues
*  politics and ideas of the good life
*  environmental justice
*  the future of human rights
*  citizenship: theory and practice
*  genocide and ethnic cleansing
*  humanitarian intervention
*  terrorism and responses to terrorism
*  international security and new security frameworks
*  ethics and capitalism in the 21st century



Papers and panels will also be considered on any related theme. 500-word 
(maximum) proposals should be submitted as email attachments (preferably in 
Word format). The deadline for receipt of proposals is August 1, 2004. 
Notice of acceptance of papers will be sent by mid-September, 2004. Full 
versions of accepted papers, which should take about 20-25 minutes to 
deliver, will be due by January 1, 2005.

Selected papers accepted for and presented at this conference will be 
published in a special issue of Politics and Ethics Review, a new journal 
(ISSN 1743-453X) of political ethics to be published by Edinburgh 
University Press commencing in 2005.  The conference fee will include a 
two-year, individual subscription to the journal.  Additional information 
about the Press may be found online at http://www.eup.ed.ac.uk.

The conference will be held on the campus of the University of Southern 
Mississippi, Gulf Coast, with state-of-the-art presentation facilities and 
easy computer access. Located near attractive beaches overlooking the Gulf 
of Mexico, it is also less than one hour from New Orleans.  Accommodation 
in local hotels, charged separately from the conference fees, will be 
available.
