2003 ANNUAL SACOMM CONFERENCE

Hosted by the Journalism Department, the Durban Institute of Technology
and the Programme for Culture, Communication and Media Studies,
University of Natal, Durban, 25 - 27 June 2003.



(New) Venue:  Durban Institute for Technology.  Ritson Road Campus, 
Winterton Walk, Durban.



Dates;  25-27 June 2003.  Delegates should arrive before noon on Wednesday 
25th for registration.  The first of the papers will be offered from 1.30pm 
on.  The event will close after an evening reception on Friday 27th.

Featured Speakers:

Professor Frank Morgan, President, International Association for Media and 
Communication Research (IAMCR);  Newcastle University, Australia.  Morgan 
will be delivering the Independent Newspapers KZN Lecture on Media Freedom.



Professor Ruth Teer-Tomaselli, IAMCR Vice-President, University of Natal, 
and SABC Board Member.



Dr Aswhin Desai, DIT journalism lecturer, sociologist and 
anti-globalisation activist.



PANEL:  THE STATE OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES IN SOUTH AFRICA

Convenor:  Prof Pieter Fourie, UNISA



Topics of general concern will be discussed:  journals, NRF matters, grants 
and applications, fragmented research.  Each topic will be introduced by a 
panelist and then opened for discussion.

Abstracts for papers are invited to the annual Southern African 
Communication Association's (SACOMM) conference in Durban in June 2003.
The conference aims to broaden debates in the communication landscape.
Academics, researchers, people from industry, graduate students and 
all  other interested parties are invited to submit proposals. The aim of 
the conference is to re-define the vision of SACOMM and to engage with the 
debates occurring in academia and industry in regard to training, 
curriculum, research, etc.

The conference will not subscribe to a specific theme. However, once 
proposals have been accepted they will be grouped into particular areas of 
interest. Our aim is to foster debate within academia, between academia and 
media industries, and within those industries. We hope that  the conference 
will also critically examine the roles of communication and communication 
studies in fostering greater social inclusivity
regarding our emergent democracy as a whole.

ABSTRACTS:
Proposals for papers should not exceed 200 words. Proposals should be
e-mailed to (ramak /at/ dit.ac.za). Abstracts should have: i) a title; ii)
name of author/s; ii) postal and e-mail address; iii) contents

Deadline for abstracts: 30 April 2003
Deadline for electronic version of papers: 15 June 2003
Abstracts will be placed on the SACOMM website for pre-conference perusal 
from the end of April.   Wed like to also place the papers to be delivered 
on the site with authorspermission, to provide delegates the opportunity of 
reading them in preparation for discussion at the Conference.

Daily rates will be charged on a pro-rata basis



These costs include registration fee, teas and lunches. It is expected that 
the Conference will host receptions each evening.
