New Reader: Sustainable AI – AI for Sustainability (2026)

Is AI something to make sustainable, or something that makes sustainability possible? This open-access reader, edited by Ana Adi, Alexandra Morton and Thomas Stoeckle and published by Quadriga University of Applied Sciences with the support of EUPRERA, keeps both questions open rather than choosing one. Fifteen scholars and practitioners write eighteen chapters. They move from AI as a wicked problem inside the polycrisis, through epistemic bias, cultural sustainability and the hidden labour behind training data, to the water, power and land behind the „weightless“ cloud. They end with the judgement communicators cannot outsource. The book asks for honesty about trade-offs, not solutions. It is also its own test case: every chapter discloses its AI use, and the editors used LLMs to design and produce the book. They say where that worked and where it did not.
