[Commlist] New journalism textbook - call for contributors
Thu Apr 23 22:06:53 GMT 2026
The idea: A brand new, open access, journalism e-textbook, aimed at
students on accredited and other courses in the UK. It is being written
by a mixture of University and college tutors, journalists involved in
leading industry training programmes and representatives of the student
media associations
Working title: Introduction to Journalism
Structure and style:
- Bite-sized chapters with 3k words of main text, plus key points,
self-test questions, up-to-date case studies and references, making it
up to c. 4k words in each chapter.
- A textbook not a formal, academic publication, written in a
straightforward style, aimed at Level 4 students.
- A range of topics meaning it could be used on just about any module.
- No in-text citations to help make it more readable, instead references
and suggested watching/listening will be in an ‘explore further’ section
at the end of each chapter.
- Open access and a e-book only, making it easy to revise and useful as
an additional tool for work with Level 3 media colleagues, as we aim to
maintain and grow our discipline
The call: Please email Richard Jones, Director of Media, Film,
Journalism, Politics and History at the University of Salford, on
(R.L.Jones /at/ salford.ac.uk) if
- You have ideas on what you’d like to see in this textbook
- You are interested in writing one of the short chapters yourself
