The book brings together contributions from a diverse group of scholars 
and colleagues from across different countries and contexts, exploring 
the changing conditions of media freedom and journalism amid significant 
political, economic, and technological transformations.


ABSTRACT

Media Freedom in an Evolving Journalism Landscape offers an 
international account of changes and continuity in media freedom and the 
emergence of new threats in the evolving journalistic sphere.
Bringing together an international team of scholars and practitioners, 
the volume critically reflects on the concept and measurement of media 
freedom, captures current developments, and sketches the impacts of 
politics, the economy, and legal and technological forces. Drawing on 
case studies and examples from different countries, it documents changes 
in the concept of media freedom, critically reflects on how media 
freedom is measured, and provides an updated overview of its current 
state, considering the impacts of evolving societal, political, 
commercial, legal, and information landscapes. Chapters explore the 
influence of digital technologies including the Internet, social media 
platforms, and AI on the ability of political regimes to cast control 
over journalists and the autonomy that individual journalists experience 
in their daily practices, and scrutinise how political and economic 
forces as well as legislation and regulations shape media freedom.
This volume will interest postgraduate students and researchers in the 
areas of media, journalism, mass communication, media law, political 
communication, and sociology.
