*Call For Proposals: What is Responsible AI?*

The integration of generative AI is happening within news production on 
the basis of presupposed efficiencies therefore, growing attention is 
being directed towards understanding its social, economic and 
environmental consequences within journalism and democratic 
communication. Currently, the relationship between AI and journalism is 
focused on two activities in the everyday world of journalistic 
practices. The first of these activities is related to *AI Content 
Licensing*,**where news corporations are partnering with AI companies. 
And, the second of these activities is *Digital Transformation* where 
corporations are investing in digital paywalls, podcasts, and audio as 
an alternative mode of consumption in physical decline of print 
circulation. We invite discussions of an understanding into how 
generative AI is being managed within a rapid media output society, 
exploring what the on-going and future potential cost is to employment 
structures, career trajectories and the ecological impact on climate change
There will be two keynote addresses (TBC).
With these prompts in mind, the organisers of the conference welcome 
papers, panels and practice-based presentations that draw on the 
following themes:

  * Chatbots, LLMs, algorithms, synthetic systems
  * Investigative technique and/or as writing
  * Quantitative and qualitative research methods
  * Environment, carbonomics, ecology
  * Labour, economics, precarity
  * Bias, ethics, embedded ideologies
  * Authorship, ownership, intellectual property
  * Gender, identity, equality
  * Race, class, age
  * Art, design, photography,
  * Multi-media, animation, games
  * Social media, platformisation, sociality
  * Theatre, television, film,
  * Cultural knowledge, memory, music
  * Heritage, exhibitions, museums and events
  * (Sub)cultures, worlds, ecosystems

The organisers also welcome papers, panels and practice-based 
presentations on the question of ‘What is Responsible AI? that do not 
directly address these themes.
We are seeking abstracts of 200-250 words. Please format them as either 
Word or Google Docs, not PDFs, and label them last name/first name. 
Abstracts should include 3-5 keywords, indicate 1-3 preferred themes, 
provide a brief bio (max. 100 words), and institutional affiliation, 
where applicable. If submitting a panel (3-4 papers) be sure to supply a 
panel brief and the abstract for each participating panellist. 
Practice-based presentations will be considered but may be subject to 
tech availability. Please specify your tech needs in your abstract, and 
we’ll follow up where necessary. Online presentations will be 
considered. You will need to provide a valid reason for not attending in 
person in the body of the email when you submit your application.
