Mon Dec 15 19:13:07 GMT 2025
*Building Anti-Ableism Through Play and Imagination*
26th February 2026
Queen Margaret University & online
Keynote Speakers: Rebecca Atkinson & Christina Lee
We are now accepting proposals for the first iteration of our seminar
series, "Building Anti-Ableism Through Representation in Children's
Material Culture".
The first seminar, entitled "Building Anti-Ableism Through Play and
Imagination", will take place at Queen Margaret University (and online
via MS Teams) on the 26th February 2026, 13:00-16:30 GMT. It is free to
attend and/or present.
We invite abstract submissions exploring how disability representation
in children’s toys can support anti-ableist practice and challenge the
often-overlooked phenomenon of ableism: a form of discrimination enacted
through omission, inattention, and the privileging of non-disabled
norms. We welcome abstracts that address, but are not limited to:
*
Disability representation in children’s toys and play
*
Critical Disability Theory Intersections of disability with race,
gender, class, or other identities in children’s toys and play
*
Design, production, and marketing of inclusive children’s toys
*
Implications for education, curriculum design, and family engagement
We welcome abstracts from people at all career stages, from people with
lived experiences of disability, as well as contributions from disabled
scholars, creators, and practitioners.

_About the Seminar Series _:
A series of three seminars based at Queen Margaret University, the
University of Strathclyde and the University of Cambridge. This seminar
series brings together scholars and practitioners from psychology,
education, disability studies, children’s material culture, and related
fields. We aim to foster critical dialogue on how disability
representation, and its absence, shapes children’s identities,
relationships, and societal attitudes.
