[Commlist] New report on Challenges and Opportunities for UK Local Media

Fri Oct 03 09:37:26 GMT 2025

We are pleased to share our new research report:

*Bisiani, S. & Gulyas, A. (2025). /Challenges and Opportunities for UK Local Media: Insights from Academic Research/*

The UK local media sector is navigating a period of profound change. Newsrooms are shrinking, revenues are declining, and audiences are disengaging. At the same time, a wide range of smaller, independent outlets are emerging to fill gaps in coverage—but many face significant sustainability challenges. Despite these pressures, local media remains vital for fostering informed and connected communities, shaping public opinion, and preserving local identity. Our report argues that while a wealth of academic research exists on these issues, its practical application in industry and policy remains limited.

This study bridges that gap, synthesising insights from British and international scholarship to inform practitioners, policymakers, and citizens about the sector’s current state, challenges, and ongoing relevance.
