This is a short, rapid response to Trump’s re-election. Trump’s return 
confirms that his presidency was not a ‘blip’, before a return to 
normality, but rather represents a more fundamental and ongoing rupture 
within liberal democracy. The book looks at the role of digital media in 
this, in splintering ('sharding') our realities and polarising politics, 
within the context of a growing anger with failing representative 
systems and the turn to a strong, populist, destructive, 
hyper-representative leader to oppose these from within.

Ultimately, it argues that Trump’s rage-filled coalition of the populist 
poor and the billionaire elite class contains a fundamental tension. 
Whereas the people are angry at the disconnection of the government and 
the impact of global neoliberalism upon their industries and communities 
and want a reinvestment of government back into their lives and a 
nativist privileging of their needs, the elite have the opposite motivation.

Inspired by Hayek, Rand, Hirschmann, Davidson and Rees-Mogg and 
contemporary accelerationists like Yarvin, the elite’s anger isn’t 
simply at the government but at democracy itself and its service of the 
majority. This is a right-wing philosophy of ‘exit’ from liberal 
democracy and from the people, in favour of ever-more unregulated 
neoliberalism and the freedom of creative, genius, entrepreneurial 
‘sovereign individuals’. The elites, like Musk, that stir up populist 
and far-right anger in the people, don’t care about them: they care only 
for the chaotic destruction of democracy for their own profit.
