The new temporary working group (TWG) Media and Linguistic Minorities

established in 2024 as part of the Nordic media and communication 
conference NordMedia

conference submissions related to minority language media. The 
conference will be organized on 13–15 August in Odense, Denmark.

Submissions in the TWG can be related to, but are not restricted to:

  *
    Minority-language media and journalism
  *
    Journalism education in minority languages
  *
    Media production and practices in the context of minority languages
  *
    Multilingualism among media audiences and in media content
  *
    Media policy and legislation regarding media in minority languages
  *
    Mediatization of minority-linguistic communities

The TWG focuses on media in minority or minoritized languages with 
relevance for the Nordic Countries. We are interested in the 
interconnection between non-dominant languages and media, discussing the 
relevance of media for linguistic vitality, the economic and political 
structures around MLM, the unique features of journalism in a minority 
language, aspects of the profession and journalism education as well as 
content creation and audiences.

We are interested in languages in a minority position, for example 
official languages in minority position (New Norwegian in Norway, 
Swedish in Finland), national minority languages (Finnish, Yiddish), 
regional languages, indigenous languages (Sámi languages), migrant 
languages (Arabic), and Nordic sign languages. There are also small 
Nordic languages that societies are based on, such as Faroese and 
Greelandic.

We welcome research at the nexus of language and media in terms of 
theories, empirical studies, methodologies, frameworks, and pedagogies.

The TWG aims at forming a new interdisciplinary Nordic forum to discuss 
linguistic aspects of media that are of high relevance for the Northern 
region and attract researchers not only from journalism and media 
studies but also linguistics, educational studies, and cultural studies 
with an interest in media, as well as minority and indigenous scholars.

NordMedia is the oldest Nordic conference for media and communication 
research, launched in the 1970s. It is organized by national Nordic 
research associations FSMK (Sweden), Mevi (Finland), NML (Norway) and 
SMiD (Denmark) (see
