“Reframing Togetherness”

The Canadian Communication Association invites submissions for its annual conference, to be held from June 3 to 6, 2025 as part of the Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences <https://www.federationhss.ca/en/congress2025> (CFHSS), at George Brown College in Toronto, Ontario.

The conference will feature a keynote talk by Professor Sarah Sharma <https://sarahsharma.com/> from the University of Toronto.

The theme for Congress 2025 is *Reframing Togetherness*. CFHSS writes: “As the first college to host Congress, George Brown invites researchers, students, educators, policymakers, and the public to reframe what it means to coexist with other humans, the environment, and technology. With an invitation and a challenge, we aim to open a collaborative space that bridges different ways of learning and producing knowledge in order to rethink our roles and responsibilities in these times of climate and humanitarian disasters, ever-evolving technologies, social isolation, dislocation, and increasing polarization.” A full description is available at www.federationhss.ca/congress2025 <https://www.federationhss.ca/en/congress2025>.

The CCA invites researchers to submit papers that engage with, challenge, and extend this theme, as well as papers and presentations that contribute to communication, media-culture and digital technology scholarship in Canada and globally.

*Congress Fees*: All CCA 2025 participants must register with Congress prior to the conference. There is an early-bird discount for those who register before March 20, 2025.

**For co-authored papers and roundtable presentations: to be listed in the program, all co-authors and all roundtable participants must also be paid CCA members and register with Congress, regardless of who presents**

*FORMAT: *The CCA will be held in person. We recognize that some people may wish to participate virtually for a variety of reasons. We are able to accommodate some hybrid presentations this year. Please indicate whether you require hybrid/remote participation when you submit your abstract. If accepted, you will need to confirm your choice (typically in February 2025).

*SUBMISSION DETAILS: *Proposals may take the form of: **

a) a single paper presentation
b) a pre-constituted panel (4 papers)
c) a roundtable or workshop (maximum 5 participants)


All proposals will be peer-reviewed by the organizing committee. _Participants may present only one paper at the conference_ (you may be listed as a second author on another co-authored paper, but the primary author is expected to present). Those who present a paper may also participate in a roundtable.

Conference papers can be delivered in French or English.

A) SINGLE PAPER PROPOSALS must include:

  * name, title, affiliation
  * brief paper title (longer titles may be truncated by the online
    platform)
  * two or three keywords/topic areas that help organizers place your
    paper on a panel
  * an abstract (350-500 words max) that outlines the research object,
    problem, or question; the main argument or contribution of the
    paper; the method of analysis and theoretical approach used; the
    significance of the research and its contribution to the field/s and
    existing research

Ensure there is no self-identifying information in the abstract and do not submit a list of bibliographical references.

B) PANEL PROPOSALS:

Panels are constituted by 4 papers, with one panelist serving as chair.

First, panel proposals should be submitted by the panel chair. The chair should submit a proposal that contains:

  * chair’s name, title, affiliation
  * brief panel title (longer titles may be truncated by the online
    platform)
  * two or three keywords/topic areas
  * an abstract (350-500 words max) outlining the common themes,
    threads, approaches

and scope of papers in the panel. Ensure there is no self-identifying information contained in the abstract and do not submit a list of bibliographical references.

Once submitted, the chair should provide each participant with the panel submission number to include in their respective submission. Then, each panelist must submit a separate paper proposal for their paper, which follows the requirements for paper proposals above (name, title, affiliation; paper title; keywords; abstract).

Each panelist should identify the panel they are participating in (using the title or submission number of the panel). If you are both panel chair and presenter, you will need to fill out two submission forms: one for the overall panel, and one for your paper as part of this panel.

C) ROUNDTABLE and WORKSHOP PROPOSALS:

Roundtables and workshop proposals are less formal and include no more than five presenters, or four presenters and a convener. Formal papers are not given, instead each presenter offers brief comments, and the emphasis is on group discussion. This format is best for topics on professional development and/or to address critical issues in the field. It is expected that most presenters will be established scholars or professionals. Note: individual abstracts are not required for roundtable participants. The chair should submit:

  * chair’s name, title, and affiliation
  * brief roundtable title (longer titles may be truncated by the online
    platform)
  * two or three keywords/topic areas
  * an abstract (350-500 words max) outlining: the roundtable workshop
    theme, problem or question to be addressed; a list of the presenters
    to be included in the roundtable and their respective
    university/industry affiliations; a brief description of the
    workshop presenters’ respective contributions; the significance of
    the roundtable in relation to existing scholarship in the field. You
    do not have to submit a list of bibliographical references.

*COMPLIMENTARY REGISTRATION: *Congress will waive conference registration fees for Black and Indigenous students and will provide complimentary community passes to access open events for Black and Indigenous members of the public.
