Stefania Milan and Davide Beraldo are thrilled to announce the publication of the Special Issue*/Contentious Data. The Shifting Space of Social Movement Research in Datafied Societies/*in the journal/Social Movement Studies/! It is Volume 23, Issue 3, 2024, and can be accessedfollowing this link [1].

The ambition with this collection is to kick-start a much-needed interrogation of social movement theory vis-à-vis the pressures of our increasingly data-driven society, dialoguing with media studies, surveillance studies, science and technology studies, critical data studies and much more. The issue includes eight original research articles from diverse geographies, and two topical interventions by David S Meyer (UCI) and Nick Couldry (LSE). The introductory article, titled "Data in movement: the social movement society in the age of datafication". seeks to re-read key concepts from social movement research in light of developments in algorithmic media, targeted advertising, and mass surveillance, and ties all the articles together [2].
