Location: South Orange
Categories: Faculty
The College of Human Development, Culture, and Media (CHDCM) at Seton
Hall University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track
assistant professor of Hip-Hop Studies with a focus in either
Educational Studies, Education Leadership, Management & Policy,
Communication, Media and Arts, or Professional Psychology & Family
Therapy. The position will begin in August 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will have the potential for and/or a demonstrated
record of quality, rigorous, practical, and community-based research
within the field of Hip-Hop studies as well as across the spectrum of
Educational Studies, Education Leadership, Management & Policy,
Communication, Media and Arts, or Counseling/School Psychology. As a new
innovative faculty line, candidates’ areas of expertise, teaching, and
research background will determine which department (Educational
Studies, Education Leadership, Management & Policy, Communication, Media
and Arts, or Professional Psychology & Family Therapy) they may be
housed within. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in establishing
robust collaborations between the Hip-Hop Studies program and other
departments, such as Educational Studies, Education Leadership,
Management & Policy, Communication, Media and the Arts, or Professional
Psychology and Family Therapy. Through these interdisciplinary
partnerships, the ideal candidate is expected to create a holistic
educational experience that blends cultural studies, artistic
expression, and critical media literacy with practical skills and
theoretical knowledge.
The college seeks applicants with a central commitment to diversity,
equity, and inclusion (DEI). Ideal candidates, using established and/or
emerging theoretical and methodological frameworks, will connect DEI
expertise to Hip-Hop Studies and Educational Studies, Education
Leadership, Management & Policy, Communication, Media and Arts, or
Counseling/School Psychology. The candidate should have a terminal
degree in education or a related field (e.g., psychology, communication,
cultural studies). We invite candidates with expertise in quantitative,
qualitative, or mixed methods research. Expertise in and experience with
critical and creative methods is encouraged. A key role of this position
will be to support the development of an interdisciplinary Hip-Hop
Studies Program. As a result, the candidate will be expected to
collaborate across the college and university to create course offerings
that will exist as part of the newly developed Hip-Hop Studies program.
This successful applicant will be expected to conduct research, teach
courses as assigned, engage in department, college, and university
service, and advise students. The department chairperson may assign
additional duties when necessary. Note: The below
responsibilities/qualifications may be specified towards applicants'
area of expertise (e.g., Education Leadership, Educational Studies,
Psychology, Communication, Media and the Arts).
About the College and University
Launched in Summer 2023, Seton Hall’s College of Human Development,
Culture, and Media (CHDCM) embodies the University’s commitment to
pedagogical innovation, intellectual ferment, and community engagement.
Uniting scholars and students from four dynamic
departments—Communication, Media, and the Arts; Education Leadership,
Management, and Policy; Educational Studies; and Professional Psychology
and Family Therapy—the College is the new home of cutting-edge,
transdisciplinary inquiry into the stickiest problems of our time.
The faculty, staff, and students of the College seek to improve the
human condition by collaborating across distinct fields that uniquely
complement one another, thereby preparing the next generation of dynamic
leaders poised to tackle contemporary social challenges and
opportunities. Expression underpins all facets of the integrated
College’s portfolio — media as a form of education and artistic
expression; teaching and learning as modes of creative expression;
expression and expressibility as critical to counseling and therapeutic
treatment; and self-expression as a vehicle of social agency. With
enrollment at approximately 1,550 total students, both graduate and
undergraduate, CHDCM is the second largest college at Seton Hall
University, with approximately 70 full time faculty and 125 adjunct faculty.
Seton Hall is located in South Orange, New Jersey, just 14 miles from
New York City. The University is the oldest Catholic diocesan
institution of higher education in the United States, and the Carnegie
Foundation classifies it as a doctoral university. It is home to
approximately 6,300 undergraduate and 4,700 graduate students from every
state in the United States and from more than 70 countries around the
world. Nearly 40 percent of our undergraduates identify themselves as
students of color, and this figure is increasing with each new
graduating class. The University also prides itself on supporting first
generation students, and 98% of our students receive scholarships and
grants to fund their education. Given this exciting and rich, diverse
community, Seton Hall pursues academic excellence and ethical
development in a collaborative environment, and prepares its students to
be servant leaders in their professional and community lives, capable of
engaging effectively with diverse populations.
In keeping with Seton Hall’s emphasis upon those historically excluded
from higher education, the College of Human Development, Culture, and
Media embraces the value and power of diversity—and the critical
importance of creating inclusive, welcoming forms of community.
Reflecting the University’s mission, the College is committed to
advancing social justice, championing equity and inclusivity, and
working toward an anti-racist future, free of violence and oppression of
all kinds. We are especially called by our mission to serve underserved
communities in and around the Archdiocese of Newark, though we also
recognize the need to attend to the intersection of the local, national,
and global in questions of power and access. We therefore commit to
addressing systemic inequality and injustice of all kinds, and we look
forward to welcoming new colleagues similarly aligned to this mission.
