Project details

A new Vice-Chancellor’s Cluster of PhD Studentships is being established at Loughborough University on ‘Digital Communities and Inclusion’ starting in October 2024. Six projects will examine timely and important issues on how ‘the digital’ is being used to create new communities, encourage more inclusive community engagement, or where digital exclusion is impacting lived experiences.

This project examines the relationship between gamification, politics and inclusion. There are vibrant academic debates on gaming and gamification, but their relationship to political engagement is ripe for further investigation. Indicative examples include ‘Fantasy Congress’, an online game drawing on points-based fantasy sports. In a different context, ‘Biden Island’ within the game ‘Fortnite’ reveals how promotional and partisan motives are intruding into, and defining, educative functions. More broadly, gamification – the application of game design elements in non-gaming contexts – is a growing feature of initiatives to engage young people in politics. These and other examples raise questions about in/exclusion within (digital) political communities that are worthy of scholarly attention.
