The Shaping of News: A Framework for Analysis <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-21963-4>

Julie Firmstone <https://ahc.leeds.ac.uk/media/staff/267/professor-julie-firmstone>, School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds.

2024, Palgrave MacMillan

This book provides readers with the understanding required to analyse the range of key factors that shape the production of news, and to assess their implications for the role of news and journalism in democracy. It brings existing research together under the umbrella of a central organising framework to explore how news and its production is shaped by a multiplicity of factors including the norms, values, role perceptions and ethics associated with journalism as a profession, the role of news sources, the changing character and significance of news audiences, the aims and objectives of news organisations, and the political, economic and social contexts within which news is produced. Exploring these factors in depth, using examples, and considering the changing conditions of news production, the chapters chart significant changes, challenges, and responses to provide the essential background for understanding the consequences of current transformations for the democratic qualities of news.

Endorsements:

“Firmstone offers students, scholars, and public stakeholders a critical yet approachable guide to understanding the myriad of forces that shape how news is produced. /The Shaping of News/ answers questions critical to anyone concerned about the future of civic life: What values should journalism embody to provide quality news for democracy? What prevents journalism -journalists and news organisations alike - from living up to these ideals?” (Nikki Usher, PhD, author of News for the Rich, White, and Blue: How Place and Power Distort American Journalism)

“Soundly drawing from the well-established traditions of research on news and journalism, and demonstrating the need to re-think, expand and diversify traditional concepts and analytical foci, Firmstone offers a delightfully comprehensive and up-to-date framework for studying and understanding the changing nature of communication, news organisations and journalism.” (Anders Hansen, Associate Professor, School of Media, Communication and Sociology, University of Leicester, UK)

“/The Shaping of News/ is essential reading for anyone who takes seriously the role of journalism in a democratic society, whether as a student, scholar or citizen. Engaging and accessible, but also wide-ranging and rigorous, the book maps out the key debates in journalism studies, demonstrating the simultaneously enduring and dynamic nature of news production.” (Karin Wahl-Jorgensen, Professor, Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Culture, Cardiff University)
