[Commlist] CFP: Decolonising filmic experience - two workshops at University of Hertfordshire

Mon Feb 12 13:58:37 GMT 2024

Decolonising filmic experience: decentring learning across culture, community and institutions Wednesday 8th May and Wednesday 26th June, School of Creative Arts, University of Hertfordshire

James Harvey is writing to invite you to two workshops on the topic of film and decolonisation, organised and hosted by the School of Creative Arts at University of Hertfordshire. The events are devoted to notions of Decolonising Filmic Experience and are an attempt to bring together interested parties around the topic of decolonisation, as it pertains to accessing film viewing, making, exhibition, distribution and education. Each workshop intends to inquire: to what extent does decolonisation as a discourse penetrate the social worlds in which film circulates? How is filmic experience being utilised or reconfigured to frame such encounters? And, what is the relationship between decolonising discourses and anti-colonial movements, internationally? The first workshop is concerned with decolonisation in film exhibition and distribution and will feature a keynote presentation by T A P E Collective, a film programming, distribution and education group, doing vital work in and around this area. T A P E was founded in 2015 by Angela Moneke and Isra Al Kassi as a response to the under-representation of minority groups on screen and in the film industries. Since its launch, T A P E has gone on to commission cutting-edge writing, provide consultation services to industry leaders and launch its own streaming platform.

Workshop 1 will take place on Wednesday 8th May 2024. I am interested in hearing from researchers and practitioners whose work broaches related areas of decolonisation in film exhibition, distribution, curation and programming. I invite 300-word proposals for short presentations, which extend our workshop discussions into related areas. Please submit your proposal (and a short bio) to (j.harvey4 /at/ herts.ac.uk) by Friday 8th March 2024.

Workshop 2 turns to the subject of decolonisation and film education, with a particular concern for notions of decentred learning and the interconnection between Film Studies and communities. While anti-colonial Film Studies can be traced to canonical works on Third Cinema in the 1980s (Gabriel, 1982; Burton, 1985; Pines and Willemen, 1989), decolonisation discourse is today providing important new frameworks to approach the social and political dimensions of film histories and futures. Professor Lindiwe Dovey’s work has been pathbreaking in this regard. As a film festival founder, director and curator, Dovey has been instrumental in raising the profile and visibility of African film in the UK. In her scholarly work, she has combined in-depth research into the exhibition, circulation, and curation of film with reflections on her own experiences. And from 2019 to 2024, Dovey is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council project, "African Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies".

Workshop II will take place on Wednesday 26th June 2024. If you are working in related areas of decolonial film education, I invite you to submit a 300-word proposal for a short presentation on related topics to (j.harvey4 /at/ herts.ac.uk) by Wednesday 1st May 2024. Please make clear in the subject heading whether you are applying for Workshop I or II. Do also feel free to get in touch with any other related queries.

Both events will take place at the College Lane campus in Hatfield. Directions to the campus can be found, here: https://www.herts.ac.uk/contact-us/where-to-find-us/college-lane-maps-and-directions
