[Commlist] CFP: Harmony in Crisis - Critical Discussions Towards Social Justice (South Africa))

Durban University of Technology (South Africa) in association with the 
Journal for Media and Rights is hosting an international hybrid 
conference from 15-18 September 2024.
The conference is entitled "Harmony in Crisis: Critical Discussions 
Towards Social Justice":

The world is experiencing escalating conflict, political tensions, 
economic pressures, climate shocks and persistent disease outbreaks. 
Clark and Aufderheide succinctly argue that citizens participating in 
critical projects understand that they are members of a common society 
connected by issues ‘in which they all see themselves as having a 
stake’. Projects in the humanities and social sciences therefore have 
the potential to inspire social reformation, which in turn ‘keeps 
democracies democratic’ by holding those in power accountable. Creating 
activist projects can therefore
be a ‘transformative act of communication’ in the face of social 
injustice (2009, 11-12).

We are members of a global society impacted by the rise of populism, 
factionalism, and a post-truth mentality where information is 
politicised and even weaponised as part of a widespread attack on civil 
liberties (e.g., reproductive rights, workers’ rights, environmental 
rights, indigenous rights, to name but a few). In such a world, social 
activism can also play into the hands of those who seek to manipulate 
their power to, in the words of Hannah Arendt, puncture a ‘hole in the 
fabric of factuality’ (‘Truth and Politics’, 1968, 253).

We welcome contributions that explore these complexities through 
critical frameworks, personal narratives, and artistic expressions, 
community engagement, opportunities for indigenous knowledge/skills 
exchange, arts exhibitions, and film screenings.

Subthemes may, include but are not limited to:

•	Crisis narratives and counternarratives
•	Indigenous Knowledge and sustainable solutions
•	Feminist perspectives on social transformation
•	Arts-based research and activism
•	Health and well-being
•	Access to quality education
•	Reduced Inequalities
•	Environmental justice and climate action
•	Environmental partnerships
•	Economic growth & innovation for social change
•	Peace building and social justice
•	Community engagement and grassroots solutions
