In recent years, the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
documentary filmmaking has sparked innovative approaches to
storytelling, challenging traditional methods and opening new avenues
for exploration. This edited collection seeks to delve into the
multifaceted relationship between AI technology and the art and practice
of documentary, exploring how AI is reshaping the creation,
distribution, and reception of non-fiction storytelling.
The integration of AI into documentary filmmaking has not only
revolutionized production techniques but also raised critical questions
about ethics, authenticity, and the nature of truth in storytelling. As
AI tools become more sophisticated, they offer filmmakers unprecedented
capabilities to enhance creativity, automate tasks, and even generate
content. The recent rise of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated
Content) is especially challenging for documentary production due to the
ways news media organisations have already harnessed such techniques for
content production. Consequently, the creative aspects of documentary
making are increasingly important. This collection aims to critically
examine the implications of this intersection, inviting scholars,
filmmakers, and technologists to explore the nuances and complexities of
this evolving landscape.
Themes to Explore:
AI in Documentary Production:
·machine learning
·computer vision
·natural language processing
·from content generation to editing and post-production.
·impact of AI tools on workflow efficiency and creative expression
·questions of Intellectual Property (IP) through a critical lens
Ethical Considerations:
·ethical dilemmas surrounding AI-driven documentaries
·issues of bias, privacy, manipulation
·the responsibility of filmmakers in portraying reality
·how do AI algorithms influence narrative construction and audience
perception of truth?
AI as Subject Matter:
·documentaries that delve into the development and societal implications
of AI itself
·how are filmmakers using the documentary form to unpack the
complexities, promises, and dangers of AI technology?
·what role does documentary play in shaping public discourse about AI?
Audience Reception and Engagement:
·how AI-driven documentaries affect audience experiences and engagement.
·do AI-generated narratives resonate differently with viewers?
·how do audiences respond to AIGC aesthetics?
·how does the presence of AI in documentary filmmaking influence
audience trust and emotional connection?
·how are documentary producers using audience (big) data in their
creative practice?
