[Commlist] MeCCSA conference cfp
Fri Jan 12 21:32:32 GMT 2024
MeCCSA 2024 Conference
4-6th September 2024
Manchester Metropolitan University
Transcending the Permacrisis
Call for Papers:
Although a crisis is commonly understood to be a temporary state and an
exception to ‘normality’, we have entered the state of permacrisis: a
continuation of challenges. Living in the permacrisis has consequences
for individuals and society at large. The absence of any notion of
normality, a lack of certainty about the future, and high levels of
anxiety might lead to a notion of political and societal instability
that has not been experienced for a long time. Stability and
predictability are absent in the face of a poly-crisis: many
interconnected crises that affect all aspects of human life. This
conference seeks to address the issues related to a permanent state of
crisis but it also, and perhaps more importantly, aims to discuss
possible solutions.
We envisage the conference to be a mix of scholarly papers, themed
panels, posters, film screenings, installations, and other
practice-based contributions, and we would welcome submissions across
the full range of interests represented by MeCCSA. Particular focus is
placed on interdisciplinary approaches that allow for a multi-faceted
interrogation of phenomena related to the permacrisis.
We welcome submissions aligned either with the conference theme or any
area covered by MeCCSA and its networks.
Possible topics can include, but are not limited to:
• Environmentalism • Resilience • Extremism • Populism • Culture Wars •
Resistance • Cancel Cultures • Wokeism • Citizenship • Activism • Racism
• Misinformation
Submitting your proposal for an individual presentation: Please submit
abstracts for individual papers (max 250 words) with presentation title,
up to 5 keywords, your name, affiliation, and email address to
https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=meccsa2024
Submitting your proposal for a panel, roundtable, screening,
practice-based session, or workshop:
Proposals should include a short description and rationale (200
words) together with abstracts for each of the 3-4 papers (150-200 words
each including details of the contributor), and the name and contact
details of the proposer with up to 5 keywords. The proposer should
coordinate the submissions as a single proposal. The proposal should be
submitted via Easychair -
https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=meccsa2024
We actively support the presentation of practice-as-research and
have a flexible approach to practice papers and presentations. This may
include opportunities to present papers and screenings in the same
sessions or as part of a separate strand. We welcome abstracts from
early career and postgraduate researchers.
