[Commlist] Two-year Post-Doctoral Fellow at Rhodes University: Rethinking Digital Inclusion and (dis)ability in South Africa
Mon Sep 18 18:28:40 GMT 2023
We are seeking a *two-year, full-time, Post-Doctoral Fellow*, to join a
National Research Foundation project on /"Rethinking Digital Inclusion
and (dis)ability in South Africa: a Southern Epistemological perspective"./
The project is hosted by the School of Journalism and Media Studies at
Rhodes University in Makhanda (South Africa) and is led by Prof Lorenzo
Dalvit.
The start date is *1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter*.
As South Africa (like many other countries) is faced with the challenges
of digital inclusion, it is important to recognise that social
inequalities may extend to the digital domain. (Dis)ability is a key
dimension of diversity alongside prominent and well-researched ones like
race, gender, language etc. The project seeks to complement, advance
and/or problematise current scholarly understandings of (dis)ability
(e.g., in terms of medical, social and other models) and of digital
inequalities (e.g., in terms of access, skills and accruing benefits). A
Southern epistemological perspective seeks to counter Eurocentric
narratives about digital inclusion in the Global South and uncover new
forms of exclusion, marginalisation and oppression. Research activities
such as a critical review of existing literature, content and critical
discourse analysis and semi-structured interviews are complemented by
professional/community engagement workshops and dissemination.
Candidates with a background in Digital Media/Inequalities, Disability
Studies, Sociology of the Media or any other relevant field are warmly
invited to apply. A PhD (awarded or very close to completion) is
required, and a track record of relevant publications is expected. Some
teaching and post-graduate supervision are an advantage.
Please email a short motivation letter (max 500 words), an academic CV
and a sample of academic writing to Prof Lorenzo Dalvit
((l.dalvit /at/ ru.ac.za) <mailto:(l.dalvit /at/ ru.ac.za)>) by *01 October 2023*.
