[Commlist] Workshop on Neurodiversity and Gaming

Fri Jul 28 18:58:14 GMT 2023

We're looking for contributors for a workshop we will be facilitating at
the 2023 Central and Eastern European Game Studies conference in Leipzig,
Germany, on Oct 19, 2023.

*Gaming and Neurodiversity*

Coined by sociologist Judy Singer, the term “neurodiversity” refers to the
variation in human cognitive functioning and experience of the world,
similarly to how the variety of living species is known as biodiversity. A
crucial tenet of the neurodiversity paradigm is that neurological
variations, ranging from autism and attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder to prosopagnosia and aphantasia, should be seen as just
that—neurological variations—instead of being stigmatized and pathologized
as mental disorders.

In this workshop, we invite contributors to reflect on the implications of
the neurodiversity paradigm for gaming and the various entanglements
between neurodivergence, mental (ill) health, and engaging with games. We
are open to different interpretations of neurodiversity and are not
limiting ourselves to any fixed set of criteria or diagnoses. Relevant
topics include but are not limited to:

   - Definitions and interpretations of neurodiversity, and their
   implications for game studies
   - Representations of neurodivergent characters in games
   - Reflections on neurodiversity and mental health in game narratives and
   game-related media
   - Neurodivergence in game industry talent, as well as in player and game
   creator communities
- Accessibility and game design considerations relating to neurodiversity
   - Game reception by neurodivergent players
   - Hobbyist games, mods, hacks, and other forms of vernacular creativity
   exploring neurodiversity
   - Neurodivergent self-advocacy in and around games

We invite anyone interested in participating to send a title and an *abstract
of ca. 300 words *to (fiadotau /at/ tlu.ee) by *August 7, 2023*, preferably as a
Word document or Google Doc. We aim to respond to authors by August 14.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any queries or would like to
discuss your idea.
