The Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence (RHET AI), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, is researching the development of quality standards and best practices in the field of science communication on Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is our acclaimed goal to explore how an educated social and critical discourse on Artificial Intelligence which takes a plethora of social implications into consideration can be induced into the field of cultural production.

Researcher / PostDoc f/m/d, E 13 TV‑L, 100%, limited until September 30, 2026

The advertised position coordinates the evaluation activities of the RHET AI Center. It is part of the "Communicative Competence Unit", led by Prof. Dr Olaf Kramer and Dr Markus Gottschling (Rhetoric Department). This unit has developed and implemented a training program for AI researchers to strengthen their competencies in the field of science communication. The unit also collaborates closely with the center’s "Public Engagement Unit".

Your task is to conceptualize, carry out and analyze evaluations of the RHET AI training program as well as its public engagement events. In quantitative and qualitative studies, you will examine how researchers acquire communicative competence and how this is used in local as well as nationwide formats of science communication and public engagement. In doing so, you will also consider the impact of RHET AI’s science communication measures.

The position and its associated scientific environment offer excellent opportunities not only for networking within the interdisciplinary research center and its partners, but also for presenting your ideas and results in the context of national and international conferences. Supported by the publication of the results of your research in relevant specialist journals, you can build up a large scientific research network.

What We Have to Offer

A collaborative and interdisciplinary team with diverse perspectives from, e.g., rhetoric, media science or machine learning. Close collaboration with the Research Center for Science Communication at University of Tübingen, with the Hector Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, an internationally acclaimed institute in researching educational processes, and with LEAD Graduate School & Research Network. An attractive remuneration based on the collective agreement for the public service in the federal states of Germany (pay group 13 TV‑L), including the social benefits customary in public service. This position is suitable for part-time work. In case of an extension of the Center's funding, the position is also renewable.

Your Profile

Above average PhD in Science Communication, Rhetoric, Psychology, Empirical Educational Research, Educational Science or an adjacent field of study.
    Knowledge of quantitative research data (e.g., SPSS, R).
Distinct experience in communicative competence, evaluation, and impact measurement. Experience with the topic of Artificial Intelligence is beneficial. You should be willing to attend training programs in science communication offered by the RHET AI Center.
    High level of initiative and teamworking.
    Very good German and English language skills.
