[Commlist] Call for Papers - Chant Down: a symposium on sport, physical cultures and multicultural sounds

Tue Mar 14 15:18:01 GMT 2023

Call for Papers

The Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies invites submissions for Chant Down: a symposium on sport, physical cultures and multicultural sounds, to take place at the University of Sussex on 24 May 2023.

The symposium will explore the roots of sound cultures within sporting spaces and examine how the sounds of sport have developed into multicultural spaces. From cricket sound systems, street sport soundtracks, the sonics of yoga, musical ring-walks and virtual sporting sounds, to the more familiar and traditional sounds of international sporting stadiums, we seek contributions that explore contemporary, historical and multicultural sporting sound cultures in all their varied forms.

We invite academic and non-academic contributions on sound in multicultural sport across a range of forms. These contributions could be in the form of traditional academic papers or presentations; journalistic/nonfiction works; and/or creative sound work and sonic explorations of sport, physical cultures and multiculture. We welcome work at any stage of development that addresses the themes of the symposium. Abstracts of maximum 250 words (including details of any technical requirements) should be submitted to the organisers (email addresses below) by 6pm on 17 April 2023.

Dr Nik Dickerson from Loughborough University will present a keynote at this event on “The sounds of Black life and Liberation: Reconstructing Black manhood(s) through the Black male athlete and Black music”. More details on Nik’s work is available here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/schools/sport-exercise-health-sciences/people/nik-dickerson/

All abstract proposals and enquiries should be submitted to the event co-organisers Dr John Doyle ((j.a.doyle /at/ sussex.ac.uk)) at the University of Sussex and Dr Daniel Burdsey at the University of Brighton ((D.C.Burdsey /at/ brighton.ac.uk)). Please feel free to contact the co-organisers to discuss the format of the event and papers, and any queries in advance. This is a free, in-person only event. The event will not be streamed or recorded.
