[Commlist] Sixth Middlesex Roundtable on Signs, Language and Communication
Tue Dec 05 11:57:25 GMT 2023
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
*Sixth Middlesex Roundtable on Signs, Language and Communication*
*18-19 January 2024*
*/The laity/*
We would like to invite you to send titles/proposals for your discussion
at the /Middlesex Roundtable on Signs, Language and Communication/
<https://www.mdx.ac.uk/our-research/research-groups/language-and-communication-research-cluster/roundtable-on-signs-language-and-communication>.
The Roundtable is an annual workshop launched in January 2019 to
encourage discussion between three paradigms of language and
communication theory: the integrationism of Roy Harris and his
followers, biosemiotics and philosophy of communication.
These areas of thought and scholarship share assumptions regarding the
fundamental role played by communicative interaction in the emergence of
signification, meaning and relationality. They also share views of
communication and language that are not limited to the understanding of
language as a code-based domain.
This year’s Roundtable will focus on the topic of the laity as it is
played out in integrationism, biosemiotics and philosophy of
communication. Topics include, but are not limited to,
lay philosophies of communication;
lay linguistics;
lay semiotics;
linguistics, communication theory and semiotics as ‘lay-oriented’;
lay metalanguage;
lay discourses vs. professional discourses;
anti-elitism;
the laity in linguistic theory;
laypeople as the subject of empirical linguistics;
semiotic ideology.
***
The Roundtable will take place in person at Middlesex University on 18
and 19 January 2024.
As usual, the Roundtable will be a small-scale workshop, with 10-minute
presentations and long conversations (flipped conference style). This
format allows for an in-depth exchange of ideas, open questions,
speculations and considerations and makes the Roundtable an ideal
environment to present and discuss work at the frontiers of research in
our disciplines.
For you to participate, we need a proposed _title_, along with a brief
(two-sentence) _description_ of what you will discuss, relating to the
topic of the laity in the context of integrationism and/or biosemiotics
and/or philosophy of communication, along with your _name and
institutional affiliation_.
Proposals should be sent to
/Paul Cobley //(p.cobley /at/ mdx.ac.uk)/ <mailto:(p.cobley /at/ mdx.ac.uk)>//
/Adrian Pablé //(adrian.pable /at/ supsi.ch)/ <mailto:(adrian.pable /at/ supsi.ch)>
/Johan Siebers //(j.siebers /at/ mdx.ac.uk)/ <mailto:(j.siebers /at/ mdx.ac.uk)>//
no later than 12pm (C.E.T.) on 15 December 2023.
