Thu Nov 23 14:40:53 GMT 2023

Position Announcement

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Media Law and Ethical Journalism, to be appointed in the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program. https://www.qatar.northwestern.edu/about/faculty-positions/open-rank-media-law-journalism-ethics.html.

We seek candidates with an active scholarly profile in fields related to Media Law and Journalism Ethics, and who ideally have a combination of university-level teaching experience, legal education and/or experience, professional media experience, and a dynamic publication record. Teaching expectations include both Media Law courses, with preference for an international media/strategic communication emphasis, and foundational courses in the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program, such as Investigative Reporting and Journalistic Storytelling. Candidates also have an opportunity to contribute to a growing list of interdisciplinary minors, such as Strategic Communication, Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, Africana Studies, and Film and Design. Preference will be given to candidates with a JD or PhD and who have some knowledge of media practice in the Middle East and North Africa.

NU-Q is a globally embedded institution; it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to academic excellence, to a vibrant student life, and to high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.

Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.

In addition to a demonstrated publication track record or evidence of a highly promising trajectory commensurate with career stage and/or rank, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications received by January 13, 2024, will receive priority consideration.  The search will continue until the position is filled or the search closed.
