Sustainable Communication (SusCom)

WHY Sustainable Communication?


In a time where anthropogenic climate change poses a threat to human 
life, and where inequality, wars and armed conflicts remain global 
problems, there is an urgent need for global sustainability. This 
includes, but is not limited to, the goals of Agenda 2030. Communication 
plays an important role in achieving goals such as elimination of 
poverty, the provision of clean water, sustainable cities and 
communities, climate change mitigation, among others.


The course


SusCom isa doctoral course designed for PhD candidates who want to 
deepen their understanding about the significance of media and 
communication in promoting social, environmental, and economic justice. 
The course departs from a critical and historical perspective on the 
roles of communication and media in shaping discourses and practices 
around sustainability, development, and social justice.


SusCom is a web-based distance learning course that focuses on the 
relationship between media and communication and the environmental, 
social, and economic dimensions of sustainability. The course has been 
developed by the international research program Sustainable 
Communication at Jönköping University. The research environment has 
published extensively in the areas of environmental communication, 
global journalism, transmedia storytelling, social movements, media 
activism, and communication for social change.
