[Commlist] Vacancy PhD bursary - ethnography of ecomedia in Kenya

We're looking for a PhD candidate to pursue PhD research on Ecomedia in
urban Kenya: plotting climate change and shaping climate action
Supervisory team: main supervisor: Katrien Pype (anthropology, KU
Leuven) ; Co-supervisor: Cajetan Iheka (international relations, Yale
university)
AIM: to gain knowledge about how media practitioners in urban Kenya plot
climate change
Objective 1: Document the various climate change narratives produced by
social media influencers, radio and television broadcasters, and
humanitarian and NGO media in urban Kenya;
Objective 2: Document the various climate change aesthetics in these
local media texts, and arrive at an understanding of how urgency is
produced by visual, acoustic, and digital means;
Objective 3: Document the various eco-technologies that these media
profess as having consequences on the environment (ranging from being
beneficial to the environment to being detrimental);
Objective 4: Analyse and compare how electronic and digital media shape
urban Kenya's awareness of climate change and their actions.
Expected results: Detailed knowledge about media expertise, media
aesthetics, and popular media as persuasive tools in climate change
action in urban Kenya to be presented in a PhD thesis and in policy brief
Planned secondment: C.N.C.D.-11.11.11. - Brussels, Head of Advocacy -
Climate Matters:
Supervisor: Nicolas Van Nuffel
Duration: 3 months
Aims: To gain experience in lobbying on a national and international
level; to learn how to bring together stakeholders and interpret and
translate their desires; to dialogue with national media; to learn how
to transfer micro-cases to policy-oriented proposals; to gain
familiarity with key social entrepreneurs in the Global South; to gain
experience in teamwork in an intercultural environment ; to learn how to
communicate towards different publics (policy groups; stakeholders);
The doctoral student will be enrolled in the PhD program at the
Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at KU Leuven.

This project is embedded in a wider consortium, in which 12 PhD projects
will be coordinated on the notion of "climate urgency". An overview of
