/PhD Scholarship available at the University of South Australia: Explore education and industry practices around new screen technologies/

If you are seeking to advance your career in the arts and interested in the emerging fields of virtual production or virtual reality storytelling, the University of South Australia – Australia’s University of Enterprise – is offering a contemporary and innovative  project-based PhD within UniSA Creative.

The advent of new screen storytelling formats, technologies and production styles raises questions for practitioners and educators in relation to collaborative practices, skills development, and training. Several Australian tertiary institutions have recently introduced courses in virtual production or virtual reality (VR); however, questions relating to best practice are hampered by the quickly evolving nature of the area.

This project seeks to explore the intersection of creative practice, technology and education. There is scope for you to shape the project to incorporate your own research interests, but a potential avenue of inquiry might include the challenges and opportunities that new screen storytelling formats, technologies and production styles create for practitioners in relation to project development and/or methods of collaboration.

You might also want to address how these formats, technologies and production styles can best be addressed in tertiary education and industry-based learning contexts. These areas might be explored through a critical study of emerging educational and/or industry approaches, through creative practice research, or through a mixed methods approach.

You have the opportunity to develop a dissertation or creative artefact and exegesis that provides new knowledge about industry and/or educational best practice in the area of virtual production or VR storytelling.

UniSA Creative encompasses film and television, game design, digital media and visual art areas, teaching and researching across multiple campuses. You’ll have access to world-class facilities, including a multipurpose TV studio that includes live and recorded broadcast facilities, a motion capture studio, a VR studio and large green screen.

The project also complements work undertaken in UniSA’s Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE), which has a significant track record as a world leader in AR and VR research. Having access to both areas will allow you to draw upon a wealth of expertise and foster interdisciplinary understandings of virtual production and/or virtual reality storytelling.

Financial Support

This project is funded for reasonable research expenses. Additionally, a living allowance scholarship of $28,854 per annum is available to eligible applicants. Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants will be eligible to receive an increased stipend rate of $45,076 per annum.

Where you’ll be based

You will be based within UniSA Creative, incorporating the South Australian School of Art, which brings together the disciplines of architecture, planning, art and design, journalism, communication and media, film and television and the creative industries to produce flexible graduates with multidisciplinary capabilities.
