*Preamble*

The 21^st Century is not only the information age, but also the era of the knowledge economy where human work is increasingly shifting towards two kinds of tasks – (1) solving problems for which standard operating procedures do not currently exist, and (2) working with new information by acquiring it, making sense of it, and communicating it to others. Individuals have moved online and are rapidly adopting new technologies and communication strategies that give them unlimited access to content generation and consumption plus unprecedented connection to individuals around the world. As much as these developments have had unprecedented impact on growth and development across societies, they have also created some challenges. However, many have chosen to see such challenges as opportunities for further development, particularly in democratic dispensations where citizens' participation in the process of governance takes the front burner. African societies and indeed Nigeria is not left out in the mix. Their citizens have significantly embraced digitalization, and have become massive and active consumers of mass media messages amidst their quest to exercise their democratic rights. The Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON) in its 2nd International Conference & Annual General Meeting is set to examine the perspectives of scholars in this regard. The conference hopes to capture the emerging essences in media exposures; the increasingly visible place of the digital citizen and its influence on social processes; and the place of democracy. It is an invitation to evaluate the meanings in these dimensions and the potential for social, cultural, economic and political evolutions, through the prism of media and communication. The conference is expected to be exhaustive in its scrutiny of the sectors for depth and appreciation of possibilities in a bid to shape the present and the future through the broadening of perspectives and the contextualization of notions. The lived experiences of participants would be brought to bear on the presentations and discussions as the conference promises to be lively, interactive and scholarly.
