RMIT Media Studios – expressions of interest

-------------------

The Bachelor of Communication (Media) at RMIT University is looking for expressions of interest for teaching staff in our unique Studio program in 2023.

Studios are double units of small class size (up to 25) with two classes per week totalling five (5) contact hours. Time in these sessions is a mixture of traditional content delivery, group collaboration and project work, technical demonstrations and practice. It is expected that students conduct media production, research, and writing work outside the classroom.

Studios themselves are a blend of theory and practice: every studio has a prompt, question, or provocation, that students respond to with a mixture of academic writing, critical reflection, and creative practice. All studios are inquiry-based, and are loosely streamed between *craft* (specific skills e.g. cinematography, editing), *concept* (broader ideas with a mixture of media responses), and *community* (e.g. partnered studios, co-teaching with other programs).

Studios are usually unique each semester and based on the studio leader’s research and technical expertise. Studios engage with emerging technologies and concepts, and many are partnered with industry. Some examples of previous studio titles include:

  * Seeing the Unseen: Media and the Environment
  * Unravelling the Real: Experiments in Documentary
  * Fact Check: Investigating ‘Fake News’ in a Post-Truth World
  * Miss Fisher and the Problem of the Prequel Podcast

The full list of past studios can be found at https://www.mediafactory.org.au/studios/studio-archive/

For 2023 we seek new studio concepts and studio leaders to supplement our existing suite. We are seeking expressions of interest in the following areas:

  * Virtual production
  * Social media content and strategy
  * Video and audio production
  * Mixed/extended realities
  * Industry-partnered studios (e.g. we have previously partnered with
    Sensis, Every Cloud Productions, ACMI)
  * Cross-/co-teaching with other RMIT programs or areas (e.g. we have
    previously run studios with Photography, Digital Media, Fashion,
    Creative Writing)

You must have at least a Masters degree (or demonstrable equivalent industry experience), be based in Melbourne and be eligible to work in Australia, with a valid Working With Children Check. If you have an idea for something you’d like to run, please email a CV plus your responses to the questions below to (daniel.binns /at/ rmit.edu.au) by Friday 14 October 2022.

 1. Proposed studio title
 2. Studio prompt: A question that the studio will seek to answer or
    explore (examples at

https://www.mediafactory.org.au/studios/what-is-studio/questions-weve-asked/)
 3. How will students respond to the prompt? What will students produce
    in this studio?
 4. Representative reading list of 3-5 main sources
