Call for articles - ViewFinder Issue 121: 40 years of Channel 4

ViewFinder Issue 121 is now open for submission from academics, 
researchers, doctoral students and video essayists.

This coming November sees the 40th anniversary of the launch of Channel 
4. In this issue of ViewFinder we will look back across the channel’s 
history, exploring its output, it’s purpose, and its effects. At the 
time of its first transmission Channel 4 was committed to providing an 
alternative to existing British television: a mission that was embodied 
in its programming for minority groups, and in its offering in the 
sphere of arts and culture. Later, the channel sought to broaden its 
appeal, achieving this, in part, through securing the rights to key 
US-produced shows heralding a “New Golden Age of Television”.

We are looking for articles between 800 and 2000 words that engage with 
Channel 4’s broadcasting culture and its historical programming. 
Contributors should feel free to suggest an area of exploration, or are 
welcome to focus on the following topics:

•	The organisational culture and history of Channel 4
•	Channel 4 programming innovation (specific shows/series or 
commissioning policy)

•	Programming approaches to minority social groups

•	Channel 4 news output

•	Channel 4 and film (production or transmission)

•	Key figures that shaped Channel 4

ViewFinder is designed to be accessible across academic disciplines and 
for public readership as well as academia. It is a chance to synthesise 
and summarise your project work and to offer think pieces and 
provocations that enrich the public conversation. More information about
