Please see below a CFP for Magic and Detective fiction. The organizer is looking specifically for a German contribution.

Working Title: Crime and Illusion in World Literature: Essays on Magic and Magicians in the Mystery and Detective Fiction Genre. TYPE: Call for Papers This book is an edited volume consisting of critical essays (each between approximately 7000-8000 words) on the theme of magic and magicians in the mystery and detective fiction genre. While detective fiction is traditionally viewed as a literature that espouses reason, the fantastical and seemingly irrational world of magic and magicians is also largely present in the genre. Whether in the form of conjuring detectives, magician criminals, characters dressed in magician stage uniform, or plots involving magic tricks, mystery and detective fiction is rife with magic. This book (with McFarland Publishing) seeks to explore this intriguing phenomenon. Essays are sought from a wide variety of critical, national, and cultural perspectives addressing the presence of magic in the genre. Some possible topics are as follows: • Magic and magicians in World Literature (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Israeli and Middle Eastern mystery and detective fiction…) • The intersection of religion/theology and magic in the mystery and detective fiction genre • The intersection of science, magic, and the supernatural in the crime fiction genre such as in Randall Garrett’s Lord Darcy series • The role of conjuring in the Sherlock Holmes series • Theoretical analyses on the seeming contradictions between rational, puzzle-centered detective fiction and detective-magicians • The appropriation of the magician stage uniform (formal evening wear) by criminals in early detective fiction. For example: Fantômas, Raffles… • Magic and detection in contemporary adaptations. For example, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) Deadline for completed essays: October 1, 2022 (style guidelines: MLA 9th edition) Projected Peer Review: December 2022 Most essays have already been submitted, and we are looking for two additional contributors to complete the book. Please send proposals, essays, or questions to Rebecca Josephy: (rjosephy /at/ oakland.edu)
