[Commlist] PSA Media & Politics Group Annual Conference

The DigiPol: Centre for Digital Politics, Media and

the University of Liverpool is delighted to host the PSA Media & 
Politics Specialist Group Annual Conference in November 2022. This will 
be a hybrid event.

*_Conference theme: ‘Digital Politics in a Disorderly World’ _*

Digital media and communications, particularly their use and abuse for 
political purposes, have come under public scrutiny like never before in 
the wake of recent political developments across the globe. In a world 
marked by the persistence of a pandemic, escalating international 
conflicts, and an accelerating climate crisis, citizens, political 
decision makers, and political and media actors (broadly defined) use 
digital media to gather information, engage in discussion, and attempt 
to influence the political agenda in a variety of contexts. Our 
conference invites contributions that seek to analyse and understand the 
role of digital media in political communication during an era of 
re-emerging or consolidating authoritarianism, democratic backsliding, 
and threats to civil rights and liberties. We seek contributions that 
examine how digital media can either exacerbate or ameliorate these (and 
other) challenges from various perspectives.

Potential topics could include (but are not limited to):

-Media and democratic backsliding

-Media and human rights

-Misinformation, mal-information and disinformation campaigns

-Platform capitalism and moderation/regulation

-Role of journalism in democratic challenges

-Online harassment and abuse

-Digital activism and advocacy

-Online news coverage of political crises/conflicts

-Digital activism and advocacy

-Memes, satire, and participatory cultures

The conference's theme allows a broad call for papers that explore the 
contribution of digital political communication across the globe. While 
the main theme of this conference is digital politics in a disorderly 
world, the *Media & Politics Group operates an open and inclusive 
policy, and papers dealing with any aspect of media and politics are 
welcomed*. This may include areas of political communication and 
journalism but also includes a broader view of the political within 
online media, television, cinema and media arts, both factual and fictional.

_Deadline for abstracts_: *Monday 4th July 2022*. Please send abstract 
proposals for 15-minute papers to Emily Harmer ((E.Harmer /at/ liverpool.ac.uk) 
<mailto:(E.Harmer /at/ liverpool.ac.uk)>). These should include the following: 
title and name, institutional affiliation and address, and email 
address, together with a paper title and *abstract of no more than* *250 
words*. Proposers should also indicate whether they are currently a 
postgraduate student.

_About the PSA, conference prizes and financial support_

The Political Studies Association <https://www.psa.ac.uk/> is the UK’s 
leading association in the study and research of politics. The Media & 
Politics Group is one of the Political Studies Association’s larger 
specialist groups.

The MPG is a welcoming and inclusive group. The conference welcomes 
contributions from both members and non-members of the Political Studies 
Association and of the Media & Politics Group.

The Media & Politics Group offers a limited number of travel subsidies 
(up to the value of £100) to support postgraduate student participation 
in this event. Postgraduate students interested in applying for these 
subsidies should please note this in their submission.

*_James Thomas Memorial Prize _*

Full papers of a *maximum of 2000 words* submitted by postgraduate 
students will be entered into the James Thomas Memorial Prize. This 
annual award is presented to the most outstanding paper by a 
postgraduate student at the Media & Politics Group Annual Conference. 
Postgraduate students wishing to be considered for the prize should 
please note this in their submission. Please send *full papers* to Emily
