*Zines ASSEMBLE is a one-day online symposium on Friday 9th September 
2022, with formal and informal talks, presentations and sharing, 
followed by a 24-hour zine jam, with facilitated in-person and online 
zine making over the weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September.*

This event isbeing supported by Wellcome Collection and organised by 
Autumn Brown (Trinity College Dublin/ Science Gallery International), 
Kin Long Tong (UCL), Kirsty Fife (Manchester Metropolitan University), 
Lea Cooper (University of Kent/Wellcome Collection) and Tamsin Walker 
(UCLAN).

“Zines”, broadly defined as an independent and Do-it-Yourself (DIY) form 
of paper publication (Kempson, 2015), have gained global visibility in 
recent decades. Zine practices continue to evolve, taking on new forms - 
for example, digital zines (Afrin, 2022; Millward, 2008). In research 
zines emerge as: affective forms of life writing; artistic practice; 
“resistive texts” challenging, queery-ing or subverting mainstream 
discourses;  and/or as an alternative economy producing textual or 
embodied communities or networks (Duncombe, 1997; Licona, 2012; Zobl, 
2009; Chidgey, 2013; Ramdarshan Bold, 2017; Watson and Bennett, 2021; 
Brouwer and Licona, 2016; Piepmeier, 2009; Poletti, 2008). However, 
despite the significant potentialities of zines, their use as research 
method (French, Curd, 2021; Ptolomey, 2020) and their growing presence 
in libraries and archives (Eichhorn, 2013; Lymn, 2014; Wooten and Bly, 
2013; Fife, 2019; Chidgey, 2006), this creative medium/media is still 
under-researched. As well as offering possibilities, zines present 
challenges to researchers working with them. More work is needed to 
explore the context, dynamics, methods, and future of zines-making and 
zines research.

Therefore, this event aims to:

  * *Promote zines studies as a transdisciplinary field*
  * *Advance a particular agenda for zines research*
  * *Provide a space for building connections with zines researchers
    across the globe*
  * *Bridge the gaps between creative, professional and academic practices*

We welcome proposals and/or attendance from any individuals involved in 
zine cultures - for example, zine makers and zine making collectives, 
zine researchers (from any disciplines), zine librarians, zine 
educators, zine publishers, zine distributors and any other parties with 
interest in this area.

You don’t have to deliver a presentation in formal academic language and 
we will be working to make the space feel as supportive as possible.

*How to submit a proposal*

Submissions should fall into one of the following categories:

  * A 20 minute presentation (similar to a traditional conference paper)
    *(six slots available) *
  * A 5-10 minute lightning or work in progress talk - this is less
    formal and available for presenters who would like to share
    developing work, talk about ongoing projects, or share skills or
    knowledge in another way *(six slots available) *
  * A workshop *(one slot available)*

You could respond to one or more of the following prompts in your 
submission:

  * *Making: *zine making practices; technologies that enable and change
    zine making; making spaces and communities for zine making (e.g.
    zine fairs, zine libraries); documenting/making histories.**
  * *Researching: *methods; ethics; dynamics.**
  * *Using: *uses of zines in classrooms; the use of zines as
    data/sources; access to zines in archives and libraries;
    digitisation of zines; queer use; application of knowledge.**
  * *Connecting: *networks and communities underpinning zine making,
    zine research and zine collections; relationships within networks;
    social dynamics of zine culture.**
  * *Bridging: *the movement of zine makers into institutions
    (universities, museums, galleries etc); the movement of researchers
    into zine spaces; zines as “third space” objects.**
  * *Locating: *contexts in which zines are made, collected, curated,
    exhibited and distributed; the establishment of zine libraries and
    archives, personal zine collections and zines in dialogue with each
    other.**
  * *Feeling: *emotional dimensions relating to the making and use of
    zines; emotions in zine research; zines and identity; zines and
    experience.**
  * *Knowing: *zines as situated knowledge; zines as interventions in
    traditional knowledge production.**
  * *Teaching and learning: *Zine pedagogy; zine workshops; skills and
    knowledge sharing; zines as grassroots education/educational tools;
    understanding realities and making sense through zines.**

Funding support is available for 20 minute presentations (£50) and 
workshop facilitators (£150). This is designed to support participation 
from people otherwise unfunded to attend (e.g.not needing to take annual 
leave from work to attend or not funded by study or work to attend).

  * What you want to do at the event
  * Why you think it’s important
  * Background information about you or your work
  * Any support or resources you would need

The deadline for submissions is 30th June 2022.

We’ll be in touch by 11th July 2022.

If we have more submissions than we have space for, we will use a 
scoring system as a group to make decisions. For transparency, our 
priorities when reviewing submissions will be:



 1. Is the proposal zine-centered?
 2. Do they already have a platform for their work?
 3. Does the proposal respond to the call for papers?
 4. Is the person/collective proposing part of a group often
    underrepresented in academia or the “public-facing” aspects of zine
    cultures?
 5. How we /feel/ about the proposal - is it exciting or interesting?
