[Commlist] Call for abstracts - II Journeys in Communication Sciences FLUC

Mon Apr 25 20:52:04 GMT 2022

*_Call for Abstracts_*

Communication research intersects with a series of critical and emerging issues whose constant analysis is valuable not only for the development of the field but also for the development of societies themselves. With “critical” we refer to both crises and the analytical perspective, and with “emerging” we want to contemplate the emergence of certain issues, as well as strengthen the debate around issues that are emerging in our field of investigation.

In a period that is still pandemic and of escalation of conflicts between global powers, it is necessary to keep alive the debate on how communication, media institutions, and activities are part of the current context, which discourses they amplify, in what way they dynamize the public agenda, under what conditions its professionals and users work and other issues that could be highlighted.

The war situation in Eastern Europe gives rise to new migratory transits and new humanitarian crises in addition to the existing ones; climate change and its impacts are increasingly visible and difficult to deal with; indigenous peoples, gypsies, and racialized people, among other groups, continue to be represented under logics based on colonial dynamics; women continue to be minorized, both materially and in their representations. For these and other reasons, it is necessary to think about our critical and emerging issues at this time.

Without ignoring the historical dimension and the longitudinal analyses, essential to Communication Sciences, the contemporary context certainly raises other concerns and proposes new challenges. It is imperative to integrate them into the intersectional lens through which research in this field observes itself and the societies in which it operates.

That said, and with the aim of, for the second year in a row, promoting a valuable environment for exchanging experiences and sharing knowledge, the Ph.D. students in Communication Sciences at the Faculdade de Letras of the University of Coimbra invite you to the second edition of the FLUC Communication Sciences Conference. The event is aimed at national and international students and researchers and will be held on June 14 and 15, 2022, in virtual format. The event is free, but participation is subject to prior registration, both in the listening mode and for the presentation of work.

The Organizing Committee and the Scientific Committee of the II Journeys also encourage the presentation of works focused on themes that researchers in Communication Sciences deem, at this moment, critical and emerging, such as:

Climate change
Geopolitical conflicts
Populisms
Ethnic-racial discrimination
Gender inequalities
Misinformation and hate speech
Public health
Management of Public or Private Organizations
Media, children, and youth
among others.

Students and researchers interested in participating should send abstracts (up to 400 words), between 04/18/22 and 05/08/22, relating to the completed individual or collaborative research; individual doctoral projects, in progress or already completed; or specific parts of research projects already completed or nearing completion.
