One of the first books published on Instagram, this volume draws
together interdisciplinary and transnational contributions focusing on
the food-related social media practices of a range of users including
farmers, restaurateurs, diet and health influencers, politicians,
teachers, celebrities, tourists, artists, cookbook authors, and everyday
users. By looking closely at the production and circulation of food
images on the platform, the book explores intersections of Instagram's
affordances and aesthetics while probing related questions of labor,
consumption, identity, and food politics. Case studies explore visual
food media in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Israel, Denmark,
Italy, France, the UK, Brazil, Canada, and the US. From food porn as
nation-branding and intellectual property battles over Instagrammable
foods to food sharing as community-building and private farmer networks
commiserating over 'farm fails', the book offers rich analysis and case
studies for audiences interested in food, media, and many fields beyond.
“Contois and Kish have prepared a veritable smorgasbord of
perspectives on the all-pervasive and all-important nature
of food on visual social media in this deliciously engrossing
collection. From aperitifs to aesthetics, and placemaking to
politics, this book has something for every reader.”
—TAMA LEAVER, coauthor of Instagram: Visual Social Media Cultures
