[Commlist] 3rd Discourse Report on Antisemitism in UK, France and Germany

Thu Apr 14 20:04:24 GMT 2022

The research project “Decoding Antisemitism” at the Centrefor Research
on Antisemitism and King’s College London investigates the extent and forms
of antisemitic hate speech on websites in Great Britain, France and Germany.
The focus is not on radicalised milieus, but on users of websites within the
political mainstream. In this respect, the project sees itself as an early
warning system for broad societal shifts, and aims to sensitise political
groups and civil societies to them.

We are pleased to refer you to the third project-related discourse report.
You can now find the PDF files in English, French and German [1] on our
website:

Over the past months, we have been analysing online comments responding to
two recent controversies. The first is the heated debate in France about the
introduction of the so-called health pass, the Covid-19 “passport”. The
second is the reaction in Germany to three criminal proceedings against
former concentration camp personnel. While radically distinct in content and
context, our analysis shows that antisemitic responses to both events are
underpinned by Holocaust distortion or trivialisation, and that antisemitic
tropes are frequently used to critique the actions of the respective
governments. In future reports, we will continue to focus on these and other
tropes also in relation to UK-specific discourse events; you will find
analyses of such events also in Discourse Reports 1 and 2.

In the next phase of the project, our findings will be used to train
artificial intelligence. In that stage, an algorithm will learn to mimic the
application of expert knowledge in order to detect antisemitic speech in a
context-sensitive way.
