[Commlist] Post Doctoral Fellow, Penn State University

Tue Mar 08 13:08:14 GMT 2022

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to teach and contribute to several new programs in the new cross-college News Literacy Initiative at Penn State University. Tied to Penn State's Land Grant mission to serve citizens of the Commonwealth, the News Literacy Initiative aims to help students and communities understand the obligations of citizens to foster an informed, inclusive, constructive and deliberative democratic sphere; to distinguish news from other forms of mediated content; and to understand how to assess the veracity of information presented as news. The candidate will help with this mission by working with units and students across Penn State in creating programming, course content, and outreach. The candidate will also take primary responsibility for working with faculty and units in seeking external grants and support for this work.

The candidate will teach three courses during the academic year, including Comm 110 Media and Democracy; and will be a resource for faculty who seek to integrate basic news-literacy content into coursework. The candidate will also be a primary point of contact for this initiative, working with a lead faculty member, assigned graduate student, and contacts across the university.

The Bellisario College welcomes application from candidates with a PhD in communication or related field whose research is related to the themes of the News Literacy Initiative. Applications should include (1) a CV, (2) contact information for two references and (3) a cover letter describing how you are suited for the position and detailing your training, production experience and expertise. Further, it is expected that the instructor will be in residence for the full academic year and will take part in the intellectual and public life of the Bellisario College and campus, attending symposia and events tied to the News Literacy Initiative and working with faculty, students and on and off campus groups as part of outreach.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The position may be renewable for one additional year.
