London South Bank University and the University of Greenwich has great pleasure in advertising two funded PhD scholarships in Virtual Production:

The PhDs will be jointly supervised by LSBU across the Schools of Arts and Creative Industries, The Built Environment, or the School of Engineering and Computing. Supervisory support is also offered in collaboration with the University of Greenwich.

We will support two energetic and critically-aware doctoral candidates interested in Virtual Production <https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=5507&type=186&DID=0&url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.target3d.co.uk%2fpost%2fwhat-is-virtual-production-2021> to examine any aspect relating to how film, pre and post production, and gaming are converging. We are therefore interested in, but not limited to:

·      Testing the aesthetic potential of the *Unreal or Unity Gaming Engines* in film,

         television, OR marketing.

·      Analysis of pre-production practices such as *camera tracking*.

·      Explorations of *novel forms of storytelling* through the use of Virtual Production.

·      The blending of the real and unreal, and/or the *exploration of space and
*

*       articulation of 3D environments *to create content, story, or experiences. This

        could include volumetric capture.

· *Asset creation, sourcing, ingest, retrieval, and commercialisation/open*

*       sourcing of assets.* This may include Artificial Intelligence (AI), NFTs (Non-

fungible tokens), and/or the use of the Blockchain.

·      The use of *soundscapes* and object-oriented sound for Virtual Production.

·      Virtual lighting and colour correction for Virtual Production, or the examination of

        camera lenses.

· *Reductions in carbon* through the adoption of Virtual Production.

·      Computational and graphic *analysis of the nature of ‘The Volume’* (the

immersive production space) and of the three-dimensional ‘creative palette’

offered by Virtual Production or volumetric techniques.

·      Computational modelling and analysis of *Virtual Production workflows* in pre-

         production, live action, or post-production.

· *Optimisation of the Virtual Production process using computational
*

*       (programming) methods*, including shared assets and resources for content

        developers and production teams.

·      Use of technologies for content/media provenance and *verification and forgery
*

*       detection*. This could include the tracking of intellectual property.

·      Network and application data analysis in support of *immersive perception*

*       optimization.*

This is an exceptionally exciting opportunity to develop a new field that is currently of high interest to the Academy and to industry. There will be opportunities to engage with industry and to use state of the art facilities in London and Greenwich, at Maidstone Studios, and additional studios in collaboration with the Hi3 Network. Hi3 is a £6.1m European Regional Development Framework initiative creating a network of three connected studio Hubs in the SE of the UK to bring researchers and SMEs from anywhere in England together to undertake research and innovation in emerging technologies for the moving image, such as Virtual Production.
