[Commlist] Fourth Middlesex Roundtable on Signs, Language and Communication, 10-11 February 2022 (online): Literacies
Thu Feb 10 19:09:45 GMT 2022
Since 2019 the Language and Communication Research Group at Middlesex
University London, in cooperation with ECREA’s Section for Philosophy of
Communication, has been hosting the Middlesex Roundtable on Signs,
Language and Communication.
The Roundtable is an annual workshop launched to encourage discussion
between three paradigms of language and communication theory: the
integrationism of Roy Harris and his followers, biosemiotics and
philosophy of communication.
These areas of thought and scholarship share assumptions regarding the
fundamental role played by communicative interaction in the emergence of
signification, meaning and relationality. They also share views of
communication and language that are not limited to the understanding of
language as a code-based domain.
This year’s Roundtable will focus on the topic of literacy as it is
played out in integrationism, biosemiotics and philosophy of
communication. This includes reading and writing as they are learned and
practiced across social contexts, as well as the interface between
reading/writing and general interpretative modes.
As Kate Pahl writes: “Living literacies involves being in and of the
world: we move through and within literacy all the time, and the mind,
heart and body of each of us play equal roles in the process. Seen in
this way, ‘literacy’ naturally conflates felt, sensory experiences with
more deliberate ways of thinking and knowing. In the past, literacy has
often been framed in terms of its performed, communicational, and
informational dimensions at the expense of its more hidden, lived, and
sometimes intensely affective dimensions.” (/Living Literacies/, MIT
Press, 2020, 1)
All are welcome to attend the Fourth Middlesex Roundtable on Signs,
Language and Communication, taking place online on 10 and 11 February
2022. A range of interdisciplinary contributions to the study and
utilisation of notions of literacy will be explored in “flipped
conference” style: short presentations, long conversations.
