[Commlist] Cambridge Data School 15-28 June

Tue Apr 12 15:11:21 GMT 2022

Rubén Huerta Zapién likes to invite you to this year's Data School at the University of Cambridge <https://www.cdh.cam.ac.uk/dataschools/social-data-school-2022>, with a particular emphasis on “Visualising Data/Investigating Images”. Find more information below:

This year’s Cambridge Social Data School will take place 15–28 June 2022. It is open to journalists, NGOs, activists, trade unionists and members of civil society organisations who would like to access tools and develop different methods for public interest investigations into any forms of wrongdoing such as armed conflicts, violations of labour and human rights, extractivism, land invasions and social media manipulation.

The topic of this year’s Social Data School is: *“Visualising Data/Investigating Images”*. For instance, we will extract data from multiple video and photographic sources to create spatial visualisations for forensic analysis and learn how computer vision algorithms are used to classify images and generate deepfakes. We will explore how images can become places of inquiry and instruments of communication, and develop a critical toolkit for interrogating the image-based cultures of the digital age.

Other elements of data research, like visualisation and social media analysis will also be part of the curriculum and the full programme will be published soon. Modules will cover the following content:

* *Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) processing and 3D visualisation*
* *Methodology for Digital Investigations*
* *Geolocation and open source investigations*
* *Critical Approaches to Data Visualisation*
* *Computer vision, automated image generation and deepfakes*
* *Introduction to Social Media data mining, analysis and visualisation*

Online participation will be available for all sessions. This is a Cambridge Digital Humanities event and is organised in partnership with the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy.

*A small number of bursaries are available to those who can demonstrate financial need. You can apply for this on the application form.*
