About the role
The discipline of Journalism here at the University of Derby has been
extremely successful in delivering outstanding practice-based courses in
a range of specialisms, including sports and football journalism, and is
now diversifying its provision in a number of ways.
Our undergraduate courses were ranked in the Top 30 of the Guardian
University Guide 2022.
We are now looking for an exceptional individual to lead the discipline.
The role is broad and varied, with opportunities to work collegially in
and beyond the College of Arts, Humanities and Education. The successful
candidate will join the Humanities and Journalism Leadership and
Development Group, allowing them to play a full role in the evolving
work of the discipline, school and college.
They will also be responsible for line management of staff within the
discipline of Journalism, helping to maximise people potential and
engagement across the full spectrum of academic activities by providing
supportive and challenging leadership. The Head of Discipline for
Journalism will lead by example through active engagement with teaching,
research and scholarship, and in promoting its activities internally and
externally.
Principal accountabilities
Academic Leadership and Development
Provide strong, inspiring and collaborative leadership; create a
positive team spirit; and maximise people potential and engagement
across the discipline area and the wider university, in order to foster
a vibrant, innovative and collegial academic community.
Enhance and develop and full range of academic activities in the
discipline area, including teaching and learning, impactful research,
professional development, academic enterprise, and scholarly activity.
Review UK and global comparators to ensure high performance and to
enhance the strength of the discipline area across a range of measures
and objectives as agreed at school level.
Provide a challenging, supportive, collegial environment for staff
to achieve excellence against a range of ISMs and key performance
indicators; to maintain a close focus upon key indicators, ISMs, and
regulatory requirements, including Of
Work closely with key stakeholders to lead and develop academic
provision within and beyond the discipline, including collaboratively
with colleagues in other disciplines, areas of the college, and partners.
Provide leadership in developing new areas of academic and
partnership activity, including internationally, and to innovate in
areas such as apprenticeships, partnerships, research collaboration,
knowledge exchange, and commercial income.
Enhance the civic and public profile of the discipline and its
work, and to lead on civic outreach to enhance the diversity and
inclusion agendas in terms of impact, student recruitment and student
success.
Work closely with the Research Leadership team and Head of School
to support, review and enhance the research environment within the
discipline in line with the University’s strategic research objectives.
Management
Lead by example in ensuring staff work collegially in and beyond
the college, and engage with university-wide departments and activities
to further college and university objectives.
Manage and support staff within the discipline in terms of
objectives, staff development, coaching, mentoring, performance setting,
and monitoring.
Utilise management information, and liaise closely with Head of
School, to monitor achievement of objectives and to ensure consistent
high performance in a supportive, collegial manner.
Work proactively with the Head of School to ensure the effective
planning and management of resources, both human and financial.
Lead discipline-level efforts to advance UK and International
student recruitment activities, working effectively with those in
recruitment, outreach and feeder colleges to promote the profile of the
discipline and work toward ensuring high-tariff recruitment pipelines as
far as possible.
Lead and manage staff in ways consistent with the university’s core
values and behaviours, and consistent with a culture of high performance.
Ensure that staff within the discipline area engage with staff
development opportunities, including the development of their own
research profiles, to enhance their personal development and the work of
the discipline.
Quality Enhancement and Governance
Ensure consistent compliance with institutional performance
expectations within the HE sector, including OfS, QAA, CMA and other
regulatory standards and agencies, as well as the university’s own
academic regulations and processes.
Work proactively to maintain and continually enhance quality
standards, and work to develop and sustain a reputation for excellence
in learning and teaching within the discipline area.
Work closely with the Head of School to review and innovate in
curriculum development, aligned to strategic requirements, changing
graduate employment landscapes, and institutional requirements.
Participate activity in college and university committees as
appropriate.
Engage proactively in academic citizenship within the wider
university community.
External Profile
Effectively develop external networks with other academics,
graduate employers, agencies, key stakeholders, FE and school feeder
colleges, other providers, and professional bodies, as appropriate.
Engage in a continual process of developing the external profile
and academic ranking of the discipline area.
Research
Work collaboratively and collegially with research leads and across
disciplines in order to enhance the research profile of the discipline
and assure the delivery of research objectives, targets and outputs.
Maintain own research and scholarship activities, delivering
outcomes that further the research work of the discipline and/or
contribute towards REF.
Person specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications
Academic/professional qualifications (at a minimum of postgraduate
level) and substantial experience in discipline area.
Hold, or be near to completion toward a PhD/professional doctorate,
or alternatively demonstrate equivalent standing in professional practice.
Fellow of Advance HE.
Commitment to work toward Senior Fellowship of Advance HE within
three years of commencement date in post.
Experience
Current personal scholarship and research in a relevant field of
enquiry and endeavour.
Substantial leadership experience within an academic/HE context.
Significant experience of teaching in HE.
Extensive experience of curriculum development, preferably across a
wide range of study levels, and, preferably, of partnerships,
collaborations and alternative delivery modes such as online.
Substantial experience of quality concepts and procedures, and of
quality assurance.
Skills, knowledge and abilities
Proven ability to produce and disseminate impactful research and
sustain an externally recognised academic profile, or alternatively to
bring equivalent professional standing within the subject area.
Demonstrable skills and experience in academic leadership and
management, with proven ability to deliver through people and teams.
Strong enterprise and commercial acumen, and the ability to manage
budgets and to interpret and analyse financial information and
quantitative data.
Proven ability to foster effective communication and collaborative
working within an academic setting.
A commitment to demonstrate, promote, and embrace the university
core values.
Be flexible, adaptable and resilient, demonstrating good
administrative abilities.
Business requirements
Contribute to the wider leadership of the school and college.
Ability to travel abroad for business.
Availability to work when necessary at weekends and during the
evenings, in particular in relation to open days or external activities.
Desirable criteria
PhD in relevant area.
Professional practice or industrial experience in a relevant area.
Professional qualification relevant to discipline area.
