The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto
Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream
position as Assistant Professor in Media Studies: Critical Platform
and/or Critical Data Studies. The appointment will have an expected
start date of July 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter.
Applicants will make contributions to the Media, Journalism, and Digital
Cultures (MJDC) Major Program at the Arts, Culture and Media Department
at UTSC. A popular and growing program with more than 700 undergraduate
majors and minors, MJDC is based in an interdisciplinary department that
supports exciting research initiatives and collaborations, including the
Critical Digital Methods Institute, the Digital Scholarship Unit, the
Critical Digital Humanities Initiative and more.
Research and teaching must focus on humanities and/or interdisciplinary
approaches to one or more of the following areas: platform governance,
platform economics, digital infrastructures, algorithmic bias and
algorithmic fairness, and decolonizing digital methods and practices. We
especially welcome scholars whose areas of expertise may include
critical race theory, Black Studies, Indigenous studies, trans studies,
critical disability studies, critical data studies, intersectional
approaches to feminist media studies, and media studies in the Global South.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Media Studies,
Communication, Science and Technology Studies, Journalism, or a related
discipline by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. The
successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in
research and teaching, and must demonstrate the ability to publish, to
attract research funding, and to work with students from diverse
backgrounds at undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to being a
full member of the UTSC Department of Arts, Culture and Media, the
successful candidate will hold a graduate appointment at the Faculty of
Information (iSchool) at the University of Toronto St. George Campus.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated
by a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) in
field-relevant, top-ranked journals meeting high international
standards; the submitted research statements; conference presentations;
awards and honours; and strong endorsements from referees of high
standing. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake
innovative and independent research and/or creative professional
activity at the highest international level and to establish an
outstanding, competitive, and externally funded program of research.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching
accomplishment, and the teaching dossier (with required materials
outlined below) including a teaching statement, sample course materials,
and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in
teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as
well as strong endorsements by referees. Other teaching-related
activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course
instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student
mentorship, or excellent conference presentations. Candidates must also
show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the
promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
as demonstrated through the application materials.
