The Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University is pleased to announce three new positions that we are seeking to fill in film studies, cinema & TV production, and dance. Review of applications begins November 1, 2021.

*Assistant Professor of Film Studies (Tenure Track)*

**

The Film Program of the Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Film Studies, beginning in July 2022. The ideal candidate will be a scholar whose work focuses on the intersections of cinema and marginalized communities from either a historical or contemporary vantage point, with either a focus on film production/distribution/industries or reception/exhibition/audiences. Areas of focus might include (but are not limited to) race and cinema, queer cinema, diaspora cinema, and/or ableism and cinema. The ideal candidate would contribute classes to both our undergraduate film studies, media studies and cinema & TV production programs as well as our Master’s degree programs in Lifespan Communication & Digital Media and in the Humanities. Practitioners with creative scholarship that aligns with the above criteria are also welcome to apply. An ability to teach screenwriting, animation, and/or directing classes is desirable, but not required.


*Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities:*

**

 1. Experience teaching at the university level;
 2. Excellent writing and communication skills;
 3. Demonstrated scholarly/creative research potential, and;
 4. Demonstrated commitment to mentoring non-traditional students and
    teaching at a minority-serving institution.

*Minimum Qualifications - Education or training:*

**

PhD in Film Studies or related field or MFA in cinema production, animation, screenwriting or related field with research and/or creative scholarship clearly focused on marginalized communities.


*Preferred Qualifications:*

**

  * Ability to teach courses in two or more of the following: film
    history, film theory,  film genres, film aesthetics, national
    cinemas/international cinemas, entertainment industries, media
    audiences, screenwriting, animation, and/or directing;
  * Experience teaching in both face-to-face and online formats;
  * Experience teaching graduate students;
  * Demonstrated record of publication and/or festival/theatrical
    exhibition;
  * Experience in applying for external funding opportunities;
  * Ability to collaborate with colleagues within  across departmental
    disciplines in communication, dance, and theatre.

*Lecturer in Film Production (Non-Tenure Track)*


The Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University, seeks a full-time Lecturer (non-tenure track) for its Cinema and Television (CTV) production program. ODU’s CTV Program emphasizes students gaining hands-on experiences; the program delves deep into production in an experiential learning environment. Norfolk is a top-50 media market. We are seeking candidates who possess Film/TV production experience and the ability to teach either producing, directing, cinematography or animation. Old Dominion University is a minority-serving institution that offers a BA/BS in Communication with a Major in Cinema & TV Production and a BA in Theatre/Dance with a Major in Cinema Production.


*Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities:*

**

 1. Experience in narrative/documentary Film/TV production, animation,
    broadcast journalism or TV News and the ability to teach related
    subjects to a diverse student population that includes numerous
    first-generation students and veterans.
 2. Ability to teach hands-on production style courses in at least one
    of the following areas:
      * Animation (3D and/or traditional)
      * Cinematography
      * Directing
      * Producing


*Minimum Qualifications - Education or training:*


 1. Master’s degree in Film, Television, Media Arts, Animation, Mass
    Communication or a related discipline.
 2. Knowledge of current industry tools relating to your areas of
    specialty in production craft.


*Preferred Qualifications:*


  * MFA in Film, Television, Media Arts, Animation, Mass Communication
    or a related discipline.
  * One or more of the following:
      o Experience Producing.
      o Desire to participate in departmentally produced film productions.
      o Ability to take on Producer role for departmental film
        productions, which will include social-impact productions.
      o Prior experience teaching at a university level.
  * Ability to teach additional courses from this list:
      o Commercials Production
      o Documentary Production
      o Lighting
      o Production Design
      o Sound Recording and Mixing
      o TV News Production
      o Editing & Color Correction

*Assistant Professor of Dance (Tenure Track)*

The Dance Program of the Department of Communication & Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Dance, beginning in July 2022. The ideal candidate will be an active artist and/or scholar who can expand and diversify our curriculum. Furthermore, our desired colleague will be committed to the dance program’s inclusive pedagogical value system and support the dismantling of the hierarchy of Western dance forms by promoting all dance and movement as equitable practices. Old Dominion University is a minority-serving institution that offers a BA in Theatre and Dance with options to major or minor in Dance and Dance Education.


*Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities:*

**

Experience teaching at the university level, excellent writing and communication skills, demonstrated scholarly/creative research potential, and demonstrated ability to teach dance history (writing intensive), and at least one discipline of performance practice (dance technique, choreography, community art/activism, etc.).


*Minimum Qualifications - Education or training:*

**

M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Dance or closely related field


*Preferred Qualifications:*

**

  * Ability to teach courses in two or more of the following: dance
    appreciation, dance pedagogy, anatomy/kinesiology, contemporary
    forms originating from the African diaspora, somatic techniques,
    film/screendance
  * Demonstrated grant writing ability
  * National/international recognition for research or choreography
    and/or performance
  * Ability to collaborate with colleagues within the dance program and
    across disciplines
  * Ability to serve in leadership roles within the dance program.
