    Exploring the boundaries of the audiovisual industries in an Irish
    context: production,distribution,consumption

**

The Editorial Board of the Irish Journal of Arts Management and Cultural 
Policy (IJAMCP) isseeking submissions for a special issue on the subject 
of audiovisual cultural policies inIreland.Youare invitedtosubmit 
apaperfor possible inclusion.

 From the funding structures, content and reception of internationally 
acclaimed TV series/Normal People/ to the worldwide success of feature 
length animation /Wolfwalkers /by theKilkenny based animation studio 
Cartoon Saloon, Irish audiovisual culture is increasinglyvisible 
globally.There is a significant body of academic work on Irish film from 
multipleperspectives. However, it is contended that the /policies /(as 
widely defined) that serve toshape what we might consider as cultural 
audiovisual products, are under examined. Thisspecial issue will 
consider audiovisual policies in Ireland from a cultural policy 
perspective. Itis a facet of cultural policy research that common terms 
in use (such as policy, culture,audiovisual) are subject to varying 
interpretations. It is the intention of this CFP to 
welcomeanexpansiveinterpretationofthe meaningoftheseconcepts.

Given the transnational/global nature (and these terms are not used 
interchangeably) of theaudiovisual industries in Ireland, the 
understanding of the policies that shape the culturalfabric of Ireland 
includes policies from beyond the nation-state, including other 
nationalpolicies and those of supranational bodies (European Union) and 
international organisations(WorldTradeOrganisation, UNESCO)andmore.

TakinganinterdisciplinaryapproachtotheaudiovisualindustriesinIrelandenablescriticalanalysis 
from multiple perspectives; including but not limited to digital media 
theories,cultural studies, political economy, cultural and creative 
industries discourse, critical legalresearch, and public policy analysis 
(to offer some perspectives). The use of multipleperspectives allows for 
interrogation of the meaning-making role of the audiovisualindustries 
and the role of cultural policies (as widely defined) in shaping the 
audiovisuallandscape inIreland.

Policy is understood as something governments choose to do or not to do. 
This issue usesDavid Throsby’s (2009) concept of explicit and implicit 
policies to broaden the scope ofanalysis to policies that might not 
usually be considered as cultural policies. These mightinclude such 
diverse areas as labour rights within the audiovisual industries, 
copyright and IPregulation,taxationpolicies, fundingstructures, 
regulationandmore.

Papers should be between 4,000 and 5,000 words (5,000 words max 
including bibliography)and will be subject to peer-review. Proposals for 
alternative forms such as perspectives onpractice, interviews and case 
studies are also welcome. The special issue will be guest edited by Dr 
Maria O’Brien of DCU ((maria.obrien /at/ dcu.ie) <mailto:(maria.obrien /at/ dcu.ie)>). 
Informal expressions of interest are welcome. Abstracts (300 words) 
should besubmitted by *31 January 2022 together with a 50-word academic 
bibliography*. Final papers are due in July 2023 with 
proposedpublicationin December2023.
