Position Summary
We are seeking to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor, Academic
Level D/E in the _School of Creative Arts and Media _as part of _the
College of Arts, Law and Education_.
We are looking for an exceptional leader with the skills and expertise
to lead our media and communications program in teaching, research and
engagement and to the fill the position of Head of Discipline, Media.
The Head of Discipline is a key strategic role providing support to the
Head of School who enriches the Discipline through leading a strategic
agenda of activity that builds student load and staff capability within
the program, and strategic partnerships across local and national media
industries. You will also contribute to School Leadership in research
and teaching.
A key component of this role will be to lead the strategic growth of
research in communication and media studies and the creative and
cultural industries, particularly in building teams and fostering
outstanding research. The Head of Discipline also leads the Media
Discipline through engagement in relevant dialogue and debate nationally
and internationally as well as strengthens relationships with the media
industry and the community in Tasmania and beyond.
The ERA 4-ranked Media program is located in Salamanca Place, in the
heart of Hobart’s civic, cultural and scientific precinct. Within
walking distance of several news media, communication, and media
production organisations, the Media program actively engages with
industry and the wider community. Our staff teach into our Bachelor of
Media and Communication, which encourages students to participate widely
with the creative industries, and across the university, in subjects
such as sustainability and science communication.
The nested post-graduate program in Strategic Communication capitalises
on the University’s distinctive strengths in environmental
communication, Antarctic and marine science, and public health. The
research program, situated in the 4701 Communication and Media Studies
code, welcomes active researchers with strong publications, external
funding experience and international networks to grow our reputation for
investigating the impacts, possibilities and social contexts of
communication and media technology and logics. The aim of the program is
to contribute excellent communication and media research and impact to
the University’s mission to create a better Tasmania and a better world.
To be successful, you will be a dynamic and established academic with
knowledge and experience in Media and Communication Studies,
particularly in Creative and Cultural Industries and/or Digital
Literacies. The person we seek has strong leadership skills,
demonstrated experience in building staff capacity, a track record of
external grant and research publication success and successful
supervision of research students.
Through the Southern Transformation Project (Hobart) and the new Hedberg
building, the University of Tasmania is making a significant investment
in creative arts and media, as part of a vision for the University as a
site for collaboration between community, industry and the University.
In 2020 the School of Creative Arts and Media refined and enriched our
creative arts program through the 2020 Curriculum Renewal project. The
University’s commitment to contemporary arts and media practice and
scholarship continues through the appointment of exceptional
practitioners and scholars.
The College of Arts, Law and Education (CALE) provides world-class
research and teaching including undergraduate and postgraduate programs
at campuses in Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast (Burnie) and online.
Each of the three campuses have recently, or are about to, move to new
buildings and new centrally located campuses, each with state of the art
teaching and learning spaces.

*What You’ll Do*
·Take leadership of the Media Program in the School of Creative arts and
Media, and work with others to create and implement a strategy to build
research and teaching capacity around effective and impactful programs
and professional development programs.
·Undertake high-quality research of international standing in the field
of Media and Communication studies, Creative and Cultural Industries
and/or Digital Literacies, secure external competitive and other
funding, publish research findings, and successfully supervise research
higher degree students to completion that meets and regularly exceeds
the University’s research performance expectations for the Level of
appointment.
·Undertake and lead curriculum innovation and scholarly teaching of an
exemplary quality, in media and communication studies, that achieves an
improved student experience and contributes to achieving student load
targets.
·Provide operational and people leadership and management, including
fostering and developing outstanding academic research and learning and
teaching capability, within the discipline of Media and the School.
·Make a significant contribution to building student load and Discipline
program awareness through a strategic agenda of engagement and
stakeholder activity.
·Provide leadership in the construction of external funding applications
that closely align with the goals of the School and CALE.
·Provide leadership in the development and maintenance of
interdisciplinary and effective links inside the University and locally,
nationally and internationally with the profession, industry and/or
wider community.
·Make a sustained and substantial contribution to the University in
achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational
responsibilities.
·Undertake other duties as assigned by the Head of School and Executive
Dean of the College
What We’re Looking For (success criteria)
·A PhD in Media and Communication Studies.
·A demonstrated capacity to build and maintain effective and productive
links locally, nationally, and internationally with the Discipline,
interdisciplinary domain, profession, industry and/or wider community.
·Proven success as a leader of people in an academic environment that
results in increased impact and performance, supported by a record of
growing strong working relationships and positive and productive team
cultures.
·Success, in a leadership capacity, in the promotion of Communication
and Media Studies activities, academic agendas, and curriculum improvements.
·Extensive experience and demonstrated achievement in University level
learning and teaching which results in student focussed outcomes,
including skills and experience in online and blended teaching skills,
course and unit coordination, curriculum design, flexible course
delivery, and multi-campus teaching.

·A substantial record in, and continuing commitment to, research that
has achieved international recognition and made innovative, and
sustained contributions to contemporary media theory, including digital
media in the field of Media and Communication Studies, Creative and
Cultural Industries and/or Digital Literacies.
·A very strong record of high-quality publications, participation in
dialogue that helps shape the understanding of contemporary media and
communication studies, and success in securing external competitive and
other funding.
·A substantial record of successful research higher degree student
supervision and completions in media and communication studies.

·An outstanding record in, and continuing commitment to, research that
has achieved international recognition and made innovative,
distinguished and sustained contributions to contemporary media theory,
including digital media in the field of Media and Communication Studies
and in particular Creative and Cultural Industries and/or Digital
Literacies.
·An exemplary record of high-quality publications, participation in
dialogue that helps shape the understanding of contemporary media and
