Film Studies is a well-established department with a growing research profile and reputation, particularly in Film Festivals, Transnational Cinemas, Documentary filmmaking, Black American Film, Sound and Audiovisual essays. The Film Studies Programmes at LJMU offer a hybrid model with all students undertaking theoretical/critical modules alongside practical filmmaking.

The Media Production programmes cover areas of traditional media production, television, documentary and drama as well as new media. Current areas of staff industry practice / research interests include: Interactive Media, new approaches to narrative (digital, immersive) 360 filming, Participatory Culture, Multiplatform, Creative Technology, Immersive Media and Documentary.

Liverpool, the most filmed in city in the UK outside of London, is an excellent base to make and teach media. Filmmaking in the city is set to grow exponentially with Twickenham Studios set to open a new development of production facilities and film stages in the very heart of Liverpool at the iconic Littlewoods Building. The city boasts a vibrant culture and LJMU is proud of its many connections with local media and arts organisations, including Liverpool Film Office, Lime Pictures, ITV and the BBC The Everyman and Playhouse, The Unity Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre, The Liverpool Philharmonic and The Liverpool Tate.
