CFP_ Indigenous African language media: Past, Present and the Future
Indigenous African language media, also referred to as ethnic or
minority language media in some contexts, encompass tools of
communication, socialisation and community that Africans used during
pre-colonial periods and are still in existence despite the advent of
Western-styled media. Some indigenous language media reinforce the
capability of conventional media of communication. Indigenous language
media in Africa are products of more than 4000 African languages used by
different tribes, races and communities. Africans have employed these
indigenous media in different ages, epochs, civilisations, and
colonisations to document, celebrate and mourn experiences using
different native formats like music, songs, festivals, rituals, dance,
arts, to mention a few. Although there are not enough scholarly works
devoted to indigenous African language media, Professor Abiodun Salawu
of Indigenous Language Media in Africa research entity at North West
University, South Africa is one of the leading scholars who has
contributed immensely to indigenous African language media scholarship.
His teachings, research, academic mentorship, and community engagement
also reflect his fields of interest, which include indigenous language
media, development communication, critical media studies, journalism and
communication research, journalism education, and digital media. His
publications that appear in reputable journals, books, edited books,
conference presentations speak volumes of his zeal for research
especially in indigenous African language media. It is incontestable
that Prof Abiodun Salawu has paid and is still paying his due in
indigenous African language media scholarship and should be honoured by
his friends, colleagues, students and well-wishers. Therefore, the
