          The Project

The project, Between Environmental Concerns and Compliance: how does media messaging affect motivation and choice between disposable versus reusable facemasks? is funded by UKRI/AHRC. The overall project, led by Professor Nathan Abrams (Bangor University), involves:

1. Assessing the influence and effectiveness of media messaging around the wearing of facemasks to date.

2. Examining the ways in which more effective media messaging can be developed to respond to rising rates of infection as well as potential long-term facemask use in the post-Covid era.

3. Examining how the wearing of facemasks can be encouraged in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner to prevent short, medium and long-term collateral environmental harm, in alignment with the UK’s obligations under international human rights and environmental laws. The overarching aim of this twelve-month project is, then, to better understand current facemask wearing behaviour as influenced by the media to improve uptake and enhance the effectiveness of media campaigns for the future, specifically considering environmental issues.

          Purpose of the Job

The post is part of an established team working in the area of media messaging. The project involves collecting and analysing data through qualitative interviewing. The research will provide an analysis of media messaging affecting motivation and choice between disposable versus reusable facemasks. The post-holder will be involved in providing general research support for the research conducted by the team. This will include assisting the research team in meeting their anticipated outcomes within the agreed timescales of the project.

In the first half of their appointment, the postholder will conduct an extensive qualitative survey of media messaging about COVID-19 related mask-wearing in non-medical settings. Using semiotic approaches, they will analyse media representations of both mask-wearing (by whom / where; and the potential messaging involved) and of the diverse types of masks to offer an initial survey of media messaging regarding mask-wearing in non-medical environments. The RA will undertake the initial research and then analyse and interpret the results with the PI (Prof. Nathan Abrams). Qualitative interviews will also be used to gain an in-depth understanding of how different media images and representations have both been received and potentially changed perceptions, feelings, attitudes and behaviours regarding mask-wearing and mask type.

In the second half of their appointment, the postholder will work with Co-I Prof. Thora Tenbrink adopting a more systematic linguistic perspective. The goal is to examine how mask-wearing choices are framed in language, in terms of discursive patterns reflecting ownership, obligations and motivations of mask-wearing choices, also to what extent the discourse on masks includes a differentiation between disposable and reusable masks. Linguistic framing further reveals the status of environmental considerations either as a side aspect that can be neglected, or a central concern. Relevant language data collected from media and interviews (see above), as well as free-text survey answers and experimental data plus legal contexts (collected in other parts of the project), will be analysed to reveal links and discrepancies between media messaging, public responses, and legal angles.

          Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To provide support to the research team in the gathering and analysis of data. This will include planning, organising and conducting qualitative interviews, as well as qualitative data collection and analysis of media representations and various types of language data.

• To work as part of the research team in delivering research outcomes. This could include contributing towards the creation of reports and publications, supporting the research team in the presentation of research outcomes to internal and external stakeholders and taking part in the organisation of events and seminars to disseminate information.

• To assist and support in the administration of the research project. This might include arranging research-related meetings, circulating information, participating in project meetings and liaising with stakeholders.

• Other related project duties as required, within the timeframe.

          Other Duties and Responsibilities

• The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

• The post holder will be expected to comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Scheme.

• The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.

• The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts.

Here, stimuli determined by other work packages will be used to examine the effect of different media images on attitudes and motivations for mask wearing and mask type. The post-holder will be involved in establishing and analysing both of these surveys, breaking down findings by social and cultural groups (e.g., by gender, age, income, and ethnicity). This will include assisting the research team in meeting their anticipated outcomes within the agreed timescales of the project.
