*Scottish International Film Education Conference*
Thursday 17th and Friday 18th June. *


The programme includes diverse perspectives on film education from 
around the world as well as panel sessions with educators using film in 
school and community settings. We particularly welcome bookings from 
both primary and secondary teachers, and school leaders who are keen to 
explore how film can inform and enhance their teaching practice.

The event is *free to attend*, and further programme details are in the 
Eventbrite link below. All sessions will be recorded and posted online 
to view afterwards. If you cannot attend the live event, we'd still 
recommend registering as an attendee to receive the link to the recordings.

Past and prospective authors published in the Film Education Journal 
present short papers on film education. This year the panel will 
particularly focus on questions about how film education might best 
cater to young people in the United Kingdom.


- *Dr Christopher Nunn *(University of Greenwich) - ‘Film(making) 
education for all? British cultural policy and film education’

- *Rebecca McSheaffrey *(Glasgow Film) - ‘Exploring the aspirations of 
young people to work in the British film industry through comparative 
focus groups in London secondary schools’

- *Dr Ryan Shand* (Ravensbourne University London) - 'Excitement lies 
elsewhere: teenage moviemakers and popular culture'


This panel will be hosted by *Mark Reid *(British Film Institute) and 
introduced with a short welcome by editor of the Film Education Journal, 
*Dr Jamie Chambers* (Edinburgh College of Art).

Since its inception in 1995, Cinéma, cent ans de jeunesse, has steadily 
grown to become one of the largest and most influential film education 
initiatives in the world today. Groups of young people across the world 
between the ages of 6 and 18 take part in annual programmes of film 
education focused around a different topic chosen every year, in which 
the parallel activities of watching and making films are not only 
interlinked, but inseparable. With the recent announcement that the 
project will no longer be continuing in its current form at La 
Cinémathèque Française, we are delighted to welcome programme founder 
Nathalie Bourgeois to share her reflections on the project's successes, 
challenges, and future prospects.

*How do we assess learning in film education? *

The question of how to assess students’ work relating to film education 
frequently poses challenges to educators working in secondary school 
contexts where film is not always considered a key part in the 
curriculum. In this panel we welcome practitioners from Northern 
Ireland, Scotland, Hungary and Spain who are currently leading and 
developing innovative assessment frameworks in film education. Speakers 
will include *David Bradley* (Dalriada School in County Antrim, N. 
Ireland), *Dr Laura Findlay* (Screen Education Edinburgh, Scotland), 
*Anette Hilbert* *(*Hungary) and *Nuria Aidelman and Laia Collel* from A 
Bao a Qu in Spain.

*Film Education in East Asia*

Over the last few decades, a number of exciting film education 
initiatives have been developed in East Asia, complementing the region’s 
rich film history. This panel presents an overview of several film 
education projects taking place in China, Korea and Japan and explores 
how film is used in different ways to enhance young people’s learning 
and development. Featuring contributions from *Dr Hang Xu *(Beijing Film 
School) in China, *Dr Aramchan Lee* (Mokwon University) & *Hyunwoo Park 
*(Seoul Broadcasting High School) in Korea and *Etsuko Dohi*, founder of 
the Children Meet Cinema programme in Japan.


This panel will be hosted by *Professor Andrew Burn *(UCL Institute of 
Education)

*Screen Scotland presents: perspectives from Scottish teachers working 
with film in primary schools*


Teachers in Scotland have been using film education in schools for many 
years. There are many opportunities to develop it strategically, in 
relation to literacy and other curriculum and school priorities, 
especially in primary schools; these opportunities continue to expand as 
the increasing take-up of mobile devices in schools expands their 
creative capabilities. In this panel discussion we hear from teachers 
with long experience of film education, including *Greg Dimeck* 
(Headteacher, Gracemount Primary, Edinburgh), *Melanie Keles* (Depute 
Headteacher, Muirfield Primary, Arbroath) and *Hannah Watt* (Teacher, 
Broomhouse Primary, previously Film Education Officer, Screen Scotland). 
The panellists will share their work and reflect upon what they have 
learned about the particular contributions film education can make to 
children’s learning and to the life of the school.
